How Wolves fans reacted to Vitor Pereira’s appointment really makes sense now

Vitor Pereira’s spell at Wolves is over, and now feels like a good moment to look back on his time at Molineux.

That starts with the day Pereira’s arrival at Wolves was confirmed.

After Gary O’Neil was unceremoniously sacked in mid-December, Pereira came in and dragged Wolves out of the relegation fight, climbing 17 points out of the drop zone.

But when he was announced as the next Wolves manager, fans had no idea what was to come with Pereira over the next 11 months. That didn’t prevent them from guessing, though.

How Wolves fans reacted to Vitor Pereira’s appointment

It was just a three-day wait after O’Neil’s dismissal before Wolves fans knew who would be taking his place.

Despite winning titles in three different countries, Pereira was a relative unknown in England. Fans were far from jovial when he was revealed. Predictions began to fly — some bang-on, some way off.

Starting with an optimistic Wolves fan, who said: “They have a better squad than Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. A good coach can stir them to survival.”

They got that one correct, but in the minority.

This reddit user had no such hopes, saying: “Great news for Ipswich, Leicester and Everton, only 1 of them will go down now, Wolves is a lock for 19th.”

A long resume set off alarm bells for this fan, who remarked: “Has a long list of clubs which doesn’t fill me with confidence, would suggest he doesn’t stick around for long. But needs must are we were unlikely to attract a high profile manager with Fosun business strategy.”

The first fan really was on his own.

“Doomed task I’m afraid. Wolves got themselves to blame after selling their best players and not replacing them,” said an especially observant supporter.

This tweeter got half right, at least.

No relegation, but no one-year anniversary for the old manager.

A couple of fans had other managers on their minds. Like this commenter who keeps it brief: “O’Neil got hard done by.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was an option for Wolves then, and he still comes up now: “Ole was right there, he’d have them playing fast counter-attacking football, fumbled it, suits Wolves very well.

Vitor Pereira saved Wolves from relegation

Pereira’s final weeks at Wolves may have been more negative than positive, but that doesn’t take away from what he achieved during his time at Molineux.

Wolves were on the brink of relegation, and the Portuguese took no time to get a tune out of the side and begin a climb back up the table.

It’s a shame how the tables have turned, with Pereira now the one leaving the team in that position.

But whoever Wolves’ next manager is, fans will be desperate for them to replicate his achievement.
