Emmanuel Agbadou and Marshall Munetsi did something together at Stade Reims that could keep Wolves in Premier League

Wolves were busy throughout the January transfer window. The Old Gold made three new signings, including two on Deadline Day.

Vitor Pereira will be pleased the club were able to add to his options after Mario Lemina joined Galatasaray.

After Wolves signed Emmanuel Agbadou at the beginning of the window, Pereira welcomed Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi just before Monday’s cut-off.

Interestingly, two of Wolves’ new signings are already familiar with one another having both already played together.

How Emmanuel Agbadou and Marshall Munetsi did at Stade Reims

Following his transfer from Stade Reims last month, Agbadou has become a fan-favourite.

The commanding centre-back enjoyed an impressive debut against Bristol City in the FA Cup and has started every Premier League since. He has already proven to be Pereira’s most important centre-back, and fans will be hoping Munetsi can follow suit.

Wolves’ deal to sign Munetsi was the second piece of business they did with Stade Reims in the winter window. The two players arrived at Molineux carrying the same price tag, too — £16.6 million.

Munetsi was with Stade Reims for five-and-a-half-years and spent half that time playing alongside Agbadou.

Unlike Wolves, Stade Reims’ preferred formation is a more traditional 4-3-3, meaning Munetsi was positioned directly in front of Agbadou and instructed to protect the Ivorian.

Boasting lots of experience playing with each other, here’s how the two fared while together at the Stade Auguste Delaune Stadium.

Solid defensive partnership

Given that Agbadou is a centre-back and Munetsi is a holding midfielder, the fact they combined for just one goal during their time at Stade Reims is impressive.

The pair were integral during Stade Reims’ 1-0 league victory over AC Ajaccio in the 2022-23 season. Agbadou and Munetsi combined to score the only goal of the game which awarded their team all three points.

Setting Munesti up inside the first five minutes, Agbadou was first to react from a corner. The newly unveiled Wolves centre-back put it on a plate for his African teammate, who slotted the ball beyond the opposition goalkeeper. That game’s highlights are available to view on YouTube.

In addition to their combined goal against AC Ajaccio, impressively, the pair lost less than one-third of all the matches they played together (22 out of 67) at Stade Reims.

If Agbadou and Munetsi can average the same points-per-game (1.33) in Wolves’ final 14 Premier League matches as what they did at Stade Reims the Old Gold will have a great chance of staying up.

While fans will be hoping for even more than 38 points, with Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton on 17, 16 and nine, respectively, another 19 points should be enough to secure top-flight survival.
