Wolves have travelled to Merseyside for a Premier League matchup against league leaders Liverpool.
Wolves beat Aston Villa in the league last time out and climbed out of the relegation zone at the expense of Leicester City, who suffered their 15th defeat of the season against Everton.

Now preparing for a very difficult game against Arne Slot’s high-flying Liverpool, Vitor Pereira must try to replicate Plymouth Argyle’s recent upset, which saw the Championship strugglers from Devon complete a famous FA Cup giant-killing last weekend.
And for one player, regardless of the result, Sunday’s game will be memorable for reasons personal to him.

Diogo Jota’s goalscoring record at Liverpool and Wolves compared
Although Diogo Jota started his career in Portugal before transferring to Atletico Madrid 2016, it has been at Wolves and Liverpool where he has really made his name.
The forward first signed for Wolves, initially on loan, from Atletico in 2017.
His 17 goals in his first season at Molineux made him part of the Wolves squad who won the Championship, and unsurprisingly led to his permanent transfer for just £12 million.
During his two seasons in the Midlands, Jota, a full international for Portugal, scored 44 goals in just over 130 games in all competitions, with just one coming from the penalty spot.

Making the move to Anfield 2020, Jota’s £45 million transfer to Liverpool still makes him one of Wolves’ most expensive ever sales.

Now into his fifth season in Merseyside, Jota continues to play an important role for the Reds.
Although he is often forced to rotate in a very fluid front three, including Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, Jota remains one of Liverpool’s most impact forwards.
The 28-year-old averages a goal roughly every three games — similar numbers he produced at Molineux — but has scored seven more game-winning goals while playing in red.

His best position analysed
Jota is one of the country’s most versatile attackers.
The Liverpool star can play in any position across a team’s front line, including as a lone and second striker, a winger on either flank and as an attacking number 10.
Jota’s versatility makes him an excellent addition to any side, and the numbers he has produced since his move to England eight years ago prove just how consistent he has been.
During his two years with Wolves, the 28-year-old’s best numbers came while playing as an outright centre-forward, where he averaged a goal every other game.
He wasn’t quite as effective when playing behind a striker but did produce good results when positioned out wide.
Played as (at Wolves) | Games | Goals | Avg. GPP |
Centre-forward | 35 | 18 | 0.51 |
Left winger | 77 | 22 | 0.29 |
Right winger | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Second striker | 14 | 3 | 0.21 |
Attacking midfielder | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Jota’s numbers at Liverpool tell a similar story when it comes to his versatility.
Interestingly, his best moments in a red shirt have come while playing as a winger. His opportunities on the right have been limited due to Mo Salah, but he has still averaged a goal nearly every other game when asked to play from the wing.
He has still been effective when playing upfront but has averaged a goal a slightly lower rate of one every three games.
Played as (at Liverpool) | Games | Goals | Avg. GPP |
Centre-forward | 80 | 28 | 0.35 |
Left winger | 58 | 24 | 0.41 |
Right winger | 22 | 9 | 0.41 |
Second striker | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Attacking midfielder | 1 | 1 | 1 |
The Gondomar youth academy graduate’s numbers suggest he is equally as efficient centrally and out wide — rare stats for a player operating the top level.
While Wolves would’ve been grateful for the £45 million they received for him five years ago, sometimes you can’t put a price on goals, and his contributions would have definitely been welcomed this season.
