Yerson Mosquera showed something v Arsenal which Wolves fans rarely saw from Max Kilman

Wolves fans were left very impressed by the debut of Yerson Mosquera against Arsenal.

The central defender finally made his first appearance in the English top-flight on Saturday, starting alongside Toti Gomes at the Emirates Stadium.

Mosquera played a full 90 minutes down in north London.

Despite coming up against a team that is set to contend for the Premier League title, and were the second-highest goalscorers last season, Mosquera put in a solid display for Wolves.

It was Toti who actually looked like the man making his debut, with the star looking uncomfortable in possession at times.

But Mosquera looked assured, and there was one thing in particular about his game that went down really well.

There were certainly no signs of timidness from Mosquera on Saturday despite it being a big day for him.

He may have been making his debut in the Premier League, but Mosquera relished the occasion and showed physicality throughout the contest.

The youngster had a very good battle with Kai Havertz, who is an established Premier League player who enjoyed a brilliant season in 2023/24 for Arsenal.

Havertz did score against Wolves in the 2-0 win. But the German quickly discovered he was in for a battle with Mosquera.

He made three tackles in the game, including one very important one in the first-half to stop an Arsenal breakaway down their left side.

There were just a couple of moments where Mosquera needed to be careful, such as when he tangled with Havertz on the floor and held him down, and also when he tried to move Gabriel Jesus out of the way when Wolves had a free-kick.

He was perhaps a little lucky he didn’t get in any trouble, and hopefully he will learn to control his emotions going forwards, but the signs are very promising.

Max Kilman rarely showed such aggression

Watching Mosquera yesterday, it was interesting to note his style in comparison to the man he has replaced; Max Kilman.

Kilman was never a dominant centre-back for Wolves. Indeed, Steve Davis said of him when he was caretaker manager: “For me, if there’s something Max needs to improve on, he needs more aggression in how he plays. You have to have a reputation to be someone the opposition hates playing against. He has to build that.”

It is already clear that Mosquera is a much more aggressive player than Kilman was, and he is definitely someone the opposition is going to hate playing against.

If he can bring his ball-playing up to somewhere near Kilman’s level, then Wolves will have a serious player on their hands.
