Wolves will miss Matheus Cunha more than ever in must-win clash vs Ipswich – the numbers prove it

Wolves are preparing for another must-win clash in the Premier League without Matheus Cunha.

Cunha’s FA charge saw the Brazilian suspended for an additional game following his three-match ban.

With one game of the suspension remaining, the FA revealed the reasons for Cunha’s ban, that leaves Wolves without their star player for another game.

Typically, the clash with Ipswich Town is hugely important following the promoted side’s win against Bournemouth, pushing the relegation battle to the wire.

Matheus Cunha’s record against newly-promoted sides

Vitor Pereira has steered Wolves in the right direction, both with and without Cunha, as the Old Gold have collected seven points from a possible nine in their previous three games.

Though the squad have very much shown that they can operate effectively without their talisman, evidence will show you that Wolves might just notice the 25-year-old’s absence against Ipswich.

That’s because, in his last five Premier League starts against newly-promoted sides, Cunha has contributed to six goals, scoring or assisting in each game.

With three goals and three assists in his last five starts against teams that have come up from the Championship, the Brazil international would’ve been licking his lips against Kieran McKenna’s squad.

Will Cunha return to Vitor Pereira’s starting XI when he returns?

Despite being out of action since his red card offence against Bournemouth, Cunha has been making the headlines.

Wolves fans were furious with Cunha as an interview was published to reveal the forward’s desire to leave Wolves in the near future.

Such unearthed a debate over whether the Brazilian, for all of his magic, should walk back into Pereira’s best XI, with a thought spared for the future.

Wolves are unlikely to have Cunha on their side next season, and given that the squad, particularly Jorgen Strand Larsen, are performing in his absence, Pereira could use this time to prepare his players for the inevitable transfer.

A win against Ipswich would take Wolves a huge step closer to confirming safety, giving the manager the chance to get to know his squad better, without their star man to lean on.
