Wolves have endured a torrid start to the Premier League season but the fans finally had something to shout about before the international break.
The Old Gold clinched a 2-0 victory over relegation rivals Southampton, as Gary O’Neil breathed a sigh of relief after being put under immense pressure.
Wolves fans are still calling for the board to sack O’Neil but after Matheus Cunha’s masterclass, supporters will be hoping for an upturn in form with some winnable fixtures on the horizon.

The Wanderers enter the third international break of the season in 19th place, two points adrift of Ipswich Town in 17th, who secured an impressive win over Tottenham last time out.
Despite their lowly position in the league, O’Neil has still witnessed some impressive performances, none more so than Cunha.

Wolves top five performers of the 2024/25 season revealed
Some of Wolves players have found the going tough in the early stages of the campaign. New signing Rodrigo Gomes has struggled for game time, as has Carlos Forbs and Pedro Lima.
There are also plenty of individuals who have stood out, with Sofascore collating the average rating of every Wanderers player during the 2024/25 season, and the best players include Cunha, Mario Lemina, Yerson Mosquera, Sam Johnstone and Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Player | Average rating |
Matheus Cunha | 7.65 |
Mario Lemina | 7.02 |
Yerson Mosquera | 6.98 |
Sam Johnstone | 6.90 |
Jorgen Strand Larsen | 6.88 |
Cunha, who has scored five and assisted twice this term, rightfully takes the top spot. Captain Lemina has gone through a rough patch of form but looked more like himself against the Saints.
Mosquera was impressive for Wolves before suffering a season-ending injury while Strand Larsen has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, striking four times in 11 league starts.
Of the players on that list, the fans will perhaps be shocked to see Johnstone feature, as he’s not looked convincing at all.

Sam Johnstone’s inclusion is shocking
The likes of Craig Dawson, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Joao Gomes will all feel disappointed not to have made the top five, as they’ve all been levels ahead of the England international.
Wolves raised eyebrows when they signed Johnstone for £10 million from Crystal Palace, as many didn’t even see him as an upgrade on Jose Sa.
Dave Watson feels it will be very difficult for Johnstone to replace Sa between the sticks and secure a regular spot in the starting XI.

As the above table depicts, the Portuguese shot-stopper has looked far more solid than his compatriot, and it begs the question as to how he managed to sneak his way into fourth position.
