Joao Gomes didn’t need long to show what he was about at Wolves. He arrived with energy, quickly established himself in midfield, and has not taken a backward step since.
His performances have been consistent, his attitude has been clear, and his role in the team has only grown since his arrival from Flamengo in January 2023.
There are players who take time to adjust, and there are players who impose themselves immediately. Joao Gomes was most definitely the latter.
There have been some tough times since he arrived, but his level has rarely dropped. He continues to influence games, win duels, and cover ground in a way few others in the squad – and also the Premier League – can match.
Those things are why his name is now part of a wider conversation. The attention building around him reflects what he delivers week after week at Premier League level.
Realistically he’ll move on this summer, but he should go with the good grace of fans – and he surely will.
Joao Gomes has been a remarkable signing for Wolves
Gomes arrived at Wolves with a clear profile built on energy and aggression. He translated that into consistent performances that quickly made him difficult to leave out.
He quickly developed into a key midfielder through ball-winning and recovery runs, and his output has helped give Wolves a level of combativeness midfield.
But there’s also something else about Gomes that has set him apart from a lot of other signings in recent years. And that is his attitude.
Fans instantly loved Gomes for the stance he took to actually join the club, rebuffing interest from Lyon – who had made a higher transfer bid than Wolves at the time – to come to Molineux.

His popularity was high to start with, and has only increased.
Gomes plays with his heart on his sleeve, and with a level of passion you just don’t see from other players.
There have been some very tough periods, such as the weeks before the sackings of Gary O’Neil and Vitor Pereira. But Gomes has never let that get in the way – he’s always given his very best and runs his socks off every game.
It was a big deal when he took the number eight shirt after Ruben Neves left. Because Neves departed as a hero and remains adored by fans.
But Gomes has been a fitting wearer of that shirt, and deserves a similar perception and status to the Portuguese when he leaves.
And speaking of that, it’s likely we will now watch Gomes’ final seven games for Wolves, which is sad to consider. But realistically he won’t stay, even if by some miracle Wanderers stay up.
But the Brazilian deserves to leave the club held in the highest possible regard by fans, and deserves cult hero status for the way he has conducted himself.
Growing interest from top clubs points to next step for Gomes
Gomes is now attracting interest from top Premier League clubs including the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City.
The interest is no real surprise, given his consistency, availability, and his ability to impact games in and out of possession.

Wolves will have to assess any offers that match his current level and value. His contribution since 2023 has already established him as one of the club’s most effective signings in recent seasons.
Hopefully, a bidding war will break out and allow Wolves to sell for the highest possible price.
