Wolves struck gold with £15m ‘super talent’ who’s now proven he’s irreplaceable to Gary O’Neil

Wolves have endured a torrid start to the season as they currently sit bottom of the Premier League table after seven matches.

Wolves were beaten 5-3 by Brentford before the international break as supporters called for Fosun to sell up.

There has been increasing pressure placed on Gary O’Neil but despite winning just one of his last 17 games in the league, the board are fully behind O’Neil and believe he can turn it around.

From conceding four in the second half against Chelsea and falling apart at Brentford, fans are feeling negative about the season ahead but the Wanderers’ position in the table is remarkable considering the talent they boast.

Matheus Cunha is an exceptional forward, who has been excellent since O’Neil arrived, while the likes of Andre and Joao Gomes are two quality midfielders.

Gomes, in particular, has seen his value skyrocket since completing a £15 million move from Flamengo to Wolves in January 2023.

Wolves star Joao Gomes’ current transfer value

Brazil international Gomes is a vital cog in O’Neil’s midfield.

The 23-year-old gets through so much work by throwing himself into challenges and sniffing out danger.

Gomes has currently made the fourth most tackles in the Premier League this season (24) while last term, only Joao Palhinha and Vinicius Souza beat him for that metric.

While Gomes hasn’t enjoyed the greatest start, at least by his high standards, the midfield destroyer is still valued extremely high.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Gomes’ current transfer value lies between €47 million – 63 million (£39 million – £52 million).

Taking the figure that is on the higher end of the spectrum (£52m), the Brazilian’s value has increased by 246% since transferring from Flamengo at the start of last year.

Perhaps more impressively, Gomes ranks above several quality players who commanded huge fees in the window, including Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite (£35m – £44m) and highly-rated Feynoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Formation change can see Joao Gomes recapture his best Wolves form

Last season, Gomes rose to prominence as one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders.

But since Wolves have changed from a three at the back system to a four-man defence with three in midfield, the Wolves No.8 has been less impactful in games.

He was far better last term alongside captain Mario Lemina, as the pair formed an incredible double pivot, with O’Neil using a 3-4-3 formation.

O’Neil has hinted at reverting back to that system following the international break and this is where the Wanderers ‘super talent’ could recapture his best form.

Although Gomes has been criticised for his ill-discipline, picking up three yellow cards so far, his position in the starting XI is non-negotiable.

Perhaps the Wolves boss should consider dropping captain Lemina, who was poor against Brentford, and partner Gomes next to Andre when they host Manchester City.
