Portugal are back in action tonight at Euro 2020 – and a potential baptism of fire awaits for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Nelson Semedo.
Fernando Santos’ side take on world champions France in Budapest.
It promises to be a great encounter between two brilliant nations, and there could be plenty of twists and turns with all four sides in Group F still able to qualify for the last 16.
Wolves star Semedo has played in both of Portugal’s games so far.
He was excellent in the first-half against Hungary.
But he struggled to maintain that level for the second 45 and then against Germany.
Tonight, he faces a very difficult challenge indeed.
The man that plays on the left for France is Kylian Mbappe, no less.
The reintegration of Karim Benzema has seen the Paris Saint-Germain superstar move out wide, with Antoine Griezmann operating from the right.
Quite simply, Semedo will need to bring his A-game, against one of world football’s most talented players.
Semedo can make big statement
There is potential for this to get very messy.
But at the same time, it’s a golden opportunity for Semedo to silence a few doubters.
Throughout his first season at Wolves, he came in for criticism for his defending and positioning.
But for many the jury is still out.
Opponents don’t come much tougher than Mbappe, who scored 42 goals and made 11 assists in 2020/21.
If Semedo can hold his own tonight, then that would be a fine achievement.
