The PFA Team of the Season has been revealed – and there is no place for Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.
The XI is dominated by Manchester City and Liverpool players, with the Reds having six inclusions.
One of those inclusions was Alisson between the sticks.
There was perhaps always a strong possibility that Alisson would get the nod from his fellow professionals.
Recently, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both selected the Brazilian for their Teams of the Season.
And now the PFA has followed suit, which is a big shame for Sa given the campaign he had.
He joined Wolves last year and few expected much of Rui Patricio’s replacement.
But he quickly established himself as an actual upgrade on the Portugal number one.
He kept Wolves in many games in 2021/22, making crucial saves in games that Wolves only went on to win by one goal.
Such saves meant the difference between collecting three points, and only one.
Ultimately, Wolves finished 10th in the Premier League in 2021/22. But they could easily have finished much lower down if not for Sa.
He is a major reason for Wolves having finished the campaign with the fifth-best defensive record in the division.
Perhaps he was always likely to struggle given his status as a newcomer versus Alisson’s status of being an established world-class goalkeeper in the Premier League.
Jose Sa can count himself very unlucky as PFA Team of the Season is revealed
Jose Sa can honestly count himself really unlucky.
Arguably, he had the biggest impact of any new signing for his club this season.
Alisson obviously had a great season again.
But he is also protected by a world-class defence.
Sa finished the season with a higher save percentage than Alisson (via FBref) and surely deserved to make it in.
