Wolves star Joe Hodge has clearly made an impression on Julen Lopetegui

Wolves have today played their second of two mid-season friendly matches against Cadiz.

The first-team were back in action in Marbella, taking on the Spanish outfit before heading back to the UK this evening.

It was a final chance for the players to stake a claim to play in the Carabao Cup match against Gillingham next Tuesday.

Wolves edged the contest 4-3 with Nathan Collins and Daniel Podence scoring in between two own goals.

It was a good runout for the players, but the performance demonstrated that Wolves are still weak defensively.

To have conceded three goals to Cadiz will be a concern for Lopetegui. But the manager will also be very pleased to have seen his side score four.

It was interesting to note Lopetegui’s team to face Cadiz today.

In midfield, young Joe Hodge partnered Joao Moutinho, which meant he started both games for Wolves out in Marbella.

Hodge, 20, was handed his Premier League debut by Steve Davis in October. He replaced Goncalo Guedes at half-time against Chelsea.

Hodge is a player the club have very high hopes for. He signed for the club whilst injured and has worked tremendously hard to get back playing to a really high level.

Hodge did well again today and was tidy on the ball. It was interesting that he was given the nod ahead of Boubacar Traore, who was an unused substitute. The Malian had seemingly been slightly ahead of Hodge in the pecking order in recent times.

Julen Lopetegui likes Wolves star Joe Hodge and the youngster may get to build on his displays under Steve Davis

Hodge got 76 minutes against Empoli, and then 87 minutes today against Cadiz.

To have featured so heavily is a very promising sign for him.

He’s a brilliant young player, and Lopetegui clear rates him.

In the YouTube video Wolves released of Lopetegui looking around Compton on his first day at the club, the Spaniard bumped into Hodge and gave him a very warm greeting.

He told him that he had played well in the Carabao Cup game against Leeds United, which suggested he was someone already on Lopetegui’s radar. He did not have to compliment him there and then, but he clearly wanted him to know Hodge made an impression on him.

It bodes well for Hodge, who may now get to build on the cameos he made under Davis.
