Wolves are officially finished for 2021 after the game with Arsenal was postponed, and supporters are now looking ahead to the January transfer window.
Really, Wolves need to be busy next month. Bruno Lage has been working with a very small squad since coming to the club.
He has done well, but definitely needs a few new faces to make life a little easier.
The priority areas are defence and midfield.
A host of names have been linked with a move to Molineux over the past few months.
Hopefully Fosun can see the good work Lage is doing and are poised to back him to help him take the team to the next level.
Signing a midfielder will be essential next month. It could be that Leander Dendoncker is needed to cover in defence.
Renato Sanches seems to be the man most Wolves fans would like to see.
But perhaps Wolves should look into signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles – a player who was linked with a £20 million move to Molineux in the summer of 2020 (Guardian).
The Arsenal star still isn’t getting regular minutes at the Emirates Stadium.
He wanted to leave the club in the summer, and it seems he could be ready to depart next month.
There was a situation in the summer when Maitland-Niles posted on Instagram saying he just wanted to go where he was wanted (Guardian).
But Wolves would need to act quickly. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Maitland-Niles on loan with a buy option.
Wolves should fight Jose Mourinho for Maitland-Niles loan
Getting Maitland-Niles in on loan with a buy option would be a good bit of business by Wolves.
He is unfortunate to be featuring so little for the Gunners at the moment. Several of their players are in fine form.
He was man-of-the-match on his last start against Watford recently.
The 24-year-old is versatile, which is something that Lage would value highly, and is good technically.
Sanches should be the man Wolves go all out for next month.
But Maitland-Niles as an alternative, or even in addition to Sanches, would be a shrewd move.
It seems Mourinho and Roma are well placed to land him. But maybe Wolves could see about a late hijack.
