Wolves should quickly hijack £9.6m move for ‘new Busquets’

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the market for a new defensive midfielder this summer, and should look no further than Alan Varela.

Varela is a 22-year-old Argentine who is reportedly close to a £9.6million move to Porto according to Record, but Wolves need to step in.

The Boca Juniors midfielder is a talent that Old Gold cannot afford to miss out on though, given his skillset and high ceiling.

Spanish reports earlier this year had even suggested Barcelona were interested which is a signal of his talent, coining him the “new Busquets”.

Wolves must hijack Varela deal

Varela despite his young age is already a two-time international for World Cup winners Argentina, and at the reported £9.6m fee, he would be a bargain.

However even if Wolves take drastic action to outbid Porto, it would still be an unbelievable coup for the midlands side.

So far this season he has made 23 appearances along with six in the Copa Libertadores as his impressive displays drawing interest from across Europe.

The “new Busquets” nickname gave amid Barcelona interest is huge praise considering the career the legendary Spaniard had at Camp Nou.

What Varela could bring to Molineux

When taking a look at Varela in game and on FBRef, it is clear to see he would help Julen Lopetegui to raise his side up a level in possession.

Varela has a 90.8% pass accuracy which ranks him in the 98th percentile amongst his positional peers.

This makes him perfect for the eventual evolution of play as Wolves aim to improve their standing next season.

However he also possesses immense defensive skills which sees he average three tackles per 90 and 1.35 interceptions per 90 (89th and 74th percentile respectively).

With the departure of Ruben Neves this summer, Varela could be the perfect low risk, high reward signing who could accelerate the style evolution at the Molineux.
