Wolves should consider trying to sign Manchester United star amid £10m starting offers claim

Wolves fans have been alarmed at the way the team has defended this season and eyes are already on that January transfer window.

The mid-season window is still a couple of months away, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone associated with Wolves who didn’t wish it was a lot closer.

Wolves failed to sign a replacement for Max Kilman in the summer. He was sold to West Ham United for £40 million.

That was seen by many as a great sale. But Wolves failed to bring in cover.

Now, following a knee injury to Yerson Mosquera – who had impressed the most of all the Wolves defenders – Gary O’Neil is in a bit of a predicament.

The Wolves manager has just three senior centre-back options, plus young duo Alfie Pond and Bastien Meupiyou on the fringes.

He needs to sign a new centre-back in January – and there might just be one decent option available.

Manchester United will listen to offers for Harry Maguire

It has been reported by the Daily Star that Manchester United will now listen to offers for central defender Harry Maguire.

The publication claims he is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag.

The player is out of contract at the end of the season, although there is an option for him to get a further year at United.

It is stated the club would listen to transfer offers starting at just £10 million.

Maguire has been on Wolves’ radar previously

It will be interesting to see if Wolves do look to make a move, because Maguire has actually been linked with Wolves in the past.

Journalist Ben Jacobs reported in 2023 that Maguire was under consideration by Wolves if Kilman left that summer. He was the subject of interest from Napoli and West Ham, who of course did go on to eventually sign him in the latest window.

Jacobs said in March 2023: “And I think Wolves could be one to watch as well even though they tend to buy a little bit younger. And the reason for that is because Max Kilman is going to be in demand over the summer period.

“More generally, I think that Wolves could be looking for right-sided and left-sided centre-back. So they could be one to watch for Maguire.”

The journalist also told GMS later on the year: “I think West Ham didn’t want to go up to that £35m-£40m mark. I was told earlier in the window that Wolves were considering Maguire if Max Kilman left. There was a rejected offer from Napoli [for Kilman]. So, at the moment, they’re not moving.”

Maguire could make a good signing for Wolves

Maguire’s move to United has not worked out.

In recent years, he has been the subject of ridicule, with many fans often pointing to his huge £80 million price tag.

But Maguire has been playing in a United side that has been a mess from goalkeeper all the way through to striker for several years now. He’s been poor, but he’s also been in very poor company.

He is absolutely an example of a player who needs a change of environment.

The spotlight has arguably been too harsh for him at United and he has struggled.

But Wolves should look at potentially signing him in January if United are going to be listening to offers starting at around £10 million. In the modern game, that isn’t much money at all for all player of Maguire’s quality, even for Wolves.

The need for a central defender with lots of Premier League experience is clear.

Maguire needs a fresh start and Wolves could genuinely be a good next club for him as he seeks to rebuild.

There have been suggestions O’Neil could move to a back three, and he could just provide that bit of bolstering that backline is crying out for.

Perhaps the only issue would be wages. Maguire is reportedly on about £190,000 per week at United. So he would need to take a fairly hefty cut if Wolves are to land him. But if he feels he wants to move in January and prove himself, perhaps he’d be willing to do that.
