Wolves must take a lesson from Nottingham Forest in their Vitor Pereira decision

Vitor Pereira’s future at Wolves is far from certain, but ownership need to take care in making that decision.

The position Wolves find themselves in at this stage in the season is bleak, taking just two points so far.

Not far ahead of them is Nottingham Forest, who have had almost as poor a time of it, already on their third manager of the season.

There is growing concern over Wolves’ prospects under the guidance of Pereira, but the Forest situation highlights an important consideration.

Nottingham Forest shows the risk of changing manager

It was former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo who held the position at Forest to start the season.

When the relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis soured, Nuno was unceremoniously sacked and Ange Postecoglou was brought in to breathe new life into a Forest side fresh off their best campaign in decades.

That decision wouldn’t pay off, though. Postecoglou failed to win any of his eight games at the helm and was relieved of his duties following the weekend’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea, after just 39 days in charge.

Now, Forest turn to Premier League survival expert, Sean Dyche.

The lesson?

Wolves need to show caution with Vitor Pereira

There’s no denying the calls for Pereira’s removal have come to the forefront since Saturday. Many Wolves fans are concerned about the club’s place in the top flight.

But what Forest have shown is that a new manager doesn’t always work, and there’s a real risk of further derailing the season by letting the Portuguese go.

Additionally, Dyche’s appointment takes another Premier League-proven manager off the market, and there are no obvious choices to replace the current Wolves manager.

Wolves handed Pereira a new contract not long ago, and turning back on that decision isn’t something Jeff Shi will want to do.

Look, if the results don’t improve, a change in personnel will be required, but that’s not a decision to make in haste. Pereira has at least shown an ability to come out of a relegation scrap unscathed. There’s no guarantee his replacement would do any better with the current Wolves squad.

A few more weeks, at least.
