Wolves’ defeat to Manchester United really laid bare the issues Julen Lopetegui has at right-back at the moment.
Nelson Semedo started against the Red Devils.
He actually looked quite good in the early exchanges, and provided an outlet for Wanderers.
But his experience really changed when he played a pass to Jose Sa that fell short.
Alejandro Garnacho latched onto it and might have scored but for a fantastic save from the goalkeeper.
That seemed to really rock the Portugal international.
He was actually unlucky to pick up a yellow card in the first-half. It meant Lopetegui didn’t really have a choice but to take him off in the second-half against an in-form Marcus Rashford.
Jonny Castro Otto replaced him, and it was mainly the Spaniard who was at fault for Rashford’s winning goal.
He just wasn’t strong enough against the England international, who fired past Sa before Collins could make a block.
And that was ultimately the different between the two teams.
Right-back is undoutedly a very weak area for Wolves right now, and the unit game has shone an even harsher light on the issue.
Lopetegui and the recruitment officials need to act, and perhaps it could be worth looking to intensify the pursuit of Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid.
Wolves are said to be one of many teams on his tail.
Fabrizio Romano reported recently that Newcastle United, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are in the race.
The Magpies have apparently even made contact already, which means Wolves may need to get a move on if there is indeed interest.
Ivan Fresneda would be a wonderful signing for Wolves, but a deal will be very difficult
The game against United really did highlight what a big issue right-back has become.
Jonny and Semedo are both in alarmingly poor form, and the situation needs to be addressed.
Fresneda is very hot property currently, so a deal will be very hard to do.
He’s a top young talent. Valladolid have just recently played against Real Madrid, and Fresneda drew praise for his brilliant showing against Vinicius Jr. He apparently won 11/16 duels he contested.
It would be huge coup if Wolves manager to get him given the level of interest.
Given the situation, officials have surely got to at least try.
