Wolves lineup from last season’s meeting with Burnley drives home Vitor Pereira’s biggest struggle

Up next is a Premier League clash with Burnley, where all eyes will be on Wolves and Vitor Pereira as they take another stab at getting their first league win.

In preparation for Sunday’s tie, Pereira may look back to last season’s 2-0 win over the then-Championship side in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

It was a comfortable win at Molineux, where a Goncalo Guedes brace sealed the victory for Gary O’Neil — the only win in his first 12 games of the season.

That said, there’s not a whole lot of similarity between the side that won last September and the side Pereira will field against Burnley this weekend.

Most of Wolves starting XI against Burnley are gone

Wolves were no better this time last year, and their inability to string together a solid run of results cost O’Neil his job and opened the door for the Portuguese boss to arrive.

This was a game they managed to see out, but there’s something about the lineup that requires a double-take.

To go through it quickly: Daniel Bentley in goal. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Craig Dawson, Santiago Bueno and Pedro Lima in defence. Tommy Doyle and Boubacar Traore in midfield. A front four of Chiquinho, Daniel Podence, Pablo Sarabia and Guedes.

You may notice that just two, Bueno and reserve keeper Bentley, are still at the club. Most others have been sold, while a couple are out on loan.

Nine out of 11 is a pretty clear signal of Wolves’ biggest problem both this season and in years gone by, and offers an explanation as to why Pereira’s side have struggled so much for cohesion.

Inexperience maybe the biggest issue for Wolves

In an effort to make sense of the terrible display we have seen from Wolves this season, many look to system issues, player mistakes and of course, the manager, as potential places to direct blame.

But could it be as simple as a lack of experience in the squad?

No new Wolves signing brought in this summer had played even a minute of English football before arriving at Molineux, and even the players still here from last season are far from Premier League veterans.

Experience comes with games, with time. These new signings are still adapting. It’s a possible explanation for the struggles we’re seeing at the moment, but one that will lose steam as the weeks tick by.

Burnley are a team without much experience as well, and there’s not an excuse imaginable that would prevent pitchforks from coming out if the Clarets come away from Molineux with a result.
