Wolves have golden chance as Aston Villa could ‘consider offers’ for midfielder

Wolves can use Rob Edwards’ contacts to their advantage this month as the club look to add players with experience in England to their squad.

Jeff Shi was pretty happy with how the summer transfer window went during Vitor Pereira’s reign, but he couldn’t have been more wrong when we look back.

None of Wolves‘ signings, other than Jorgen Strand Larsen, had any kind of experience in the Premier League or even English football.

Following the exits of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri, replacing them with relatively unproven players at this level hasn’t worked out.

As we know, it takes time for players to settle into the Premier League. All you have to do is look at Cunha’s struggles when he first moved to Molineux.

It’s blatantly obvious what Wolves must do, but there are doubts over whether Fosun can deliver.

Ross Barkley could become available at Aston Villa

Rob Edwards and Ross Barkley shared a close relationship during their time at Luton Town, with the Wolves boss credited for transforming the midfielder’s career.

Barkley registered five goals and six assists in 37 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign, but it was much more than the attacking contributions, as his engine was on full show.

However, now at Aston Villa he’s struggling for minutes. Just 145 so far this season, which hasn’t been helped by a knee injury that is set to keep him out until the end of January at least.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa could be open to offers for the midfielder with his contract set to run out at the end of the season.

What would Ross Barkley bring to Wolves?

As mentioned previously, Ross Barkley would bring a wealth of Premier League experience and a proven creative spark to a Wolves side currently struggling for both points and goals.

Under Edwards, Barkley successfully transitioned into a deeper midfield role. He offers high-level press resistance and ball progression, something that could go missing if Joao Gomes leaves.

Despite limited starts this season due to his injury and personal time away, he has remained impactful off the bench, including scoring a header against Bournemouth in November.

The two main things Wolves lack right now is leadership and top-flight pedigree necessary for a relegation scrap and more importantly, proven quality in the Championship if it comes to that.

Gone are the days of having strong leaders like Conor Coady at Molineux.
