Wolves fans won’t believe their August Premier League record, it’s truly astonishing

Wolves’ August record in the Premier League reads like a horror novel.

Wolves fans may be feeling a sense of trepidation about the beginning of the campaign, and rightly so. The last couple of seasons have started slow, and that’s being kind.

Last campaign, it was ten games without a win for Gary O’ Neil’s side, spelling the beginning of the end of his time at the helm. O’Neil was sacked in December after a difficult stretch, paving the way for Vitor Pereira to rescue their season.

But really, the slow start is a common occurrence for Wolves since returning to the Premier League in 2018.

Wolves have won just one August game since making Premier League return

Before a ball is kicked in August, most fanbases are filled with hope for a strong start, with new signings, player statements and fresh competition all driving a sense of anticipation.

But for attendees at Molineux, working up such optimism is easier said than done. Since 2018, Wolves have had 17 matches, losing ten and winning just one.

Such a record may have fans wincing at the prospect of the same old story coming to fruition this campaign, especially given the goal of Vitor Pereira to challenge for Europe.

But, there is a positive vibe around Wolves this pre-season and an awareness of what needs to be done differently.

Emmanuel Agbadou on how Wolves are preparing to break the cycle

In his first interview since joining the club in January, Emmanuel Agbadou discussed how the squad is preparing for the opening day of the season.

He said: “We don’t want to have a start like last season, no, we need to start well. To do this, we need to recharge well, and I think we recharge well.”

Agbadou was not in the dressing room for any of the recent August slumps, but he hopes his presence as a leader can help turn the club’s early-season record around. He acknowledged the positive of having multiple leaders in the Wolves dressing room.

Wolves don’t have any bankers in terms of fixtures in August, but two home fixtures and a trip to Bournemouth could give them the chance to pick up three points in at least one of their opening three games.

If Wolves can carry momentum from what was a brilliant recovery in the back-end of last season, while also strengthening the squad in what remains of the window, they put themselves in a strong position to change their August fortunes.
