Wolves are taking on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park this weekend.
Wanderers are looking to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League, after a fantastic 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies have just been stuttering a little bit of late.
They’ve lost their last two Premier League games to Manchester City and Liverpool, and also lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester United.
But it should still be a tough game for Wolves, with Newcastle boasting several top players in their starting XI these days.
One such individual is Bruno Guimaraes, who has become the darling of St. James’ since his move from Lyon just over a year ago.
Bruno was the marquee signing for Newcastle that window and big things were expected of him.
And he has delivered, putting in a string of quality performances in midfield. And he has just recently been named North East Football Writers Player of the Year.
The Magpies’ faithful has reach a point of absolutely loving the silky Brazilian and it can be argued he is already somewhere near cult hero status.
Wolves will need to contain him on Sunday – and one wonders if Julen Lopetegui might seek to start Joao Gomes to do that.
Gomes is still waiting for his first start for Wolves having made a few substitute appearances so far.
It is interesting to think about a potential Bruno vs Gomes midfield battle.
Arguably, Bruno’s start at Newcastle is what Gomes should be looking to emulate at Molineux.
Wolves could eventually have their own Bruno Guimaraes in Joao Gomes
Bruno is certainly a cult hero for many Newcastle fans already.
Not only is he a top-class player, but he also conducts himself in a way that really endears him to the supporters.
There is definitely potential for Gomes to enjoy a similar kind of reception by Wolves fans.
He is actually already hugely popular at Molineux due to the way he forced through his move. The whole ‘#FreeJoaoGomes’ thing ended up doing wonders for his popularity.
He then went and struck a brilliant winner against Southampton on his debut. Bruno’s first goal for Newcastle also came against the Saints.
We haven’t seen a great deal yet from Gomes on the pitch. But by many accounts he is a very talented young midfield player.
It’s possible that eventually, Gomes might just become Wolves’ very own Brazilian cult hero.
