Wolves fans are expecting a lot of change at the club this summer – and an exciting new-look midfield could well be on the cards.
Wanderers limped to a 10th place finish in 2021/22, having being well positioned to secured European football.
The team squandered a number of great opportunities, and there is a feeling that an overhaul is now on the horizon.
A number of players are already confirmed to be leaving.
Fernando Marcal and John Ruddy will leave when their contracts expire, and Romain Saiss is highly likely follow the pair out of door.
And many Wolves fans are expecting Ruben Neves to depart this summer, with several clubs interested.
Neves leaving would be leaving a huge hole. He has been an outstanding servant for the club.
But all good things come to an end, and Wanderers must ensure they spend the money from his sale wisely.
It has been claimed by the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath that Wolves are now in talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Sporting CP.
He has been linked with Wolves for a long time now, and it feels like he could finally pitch up at Molineux this summer, especially if Neves departs.
And if that was the case then he would go straight into the starting XI at the base of the midfield.
He would provide some much needed steel, and is an out-and-out holding midfielder who breaks up play and gives the ball to more creative players.
Wanderers are one of several clubs on the Mali international’s tail. He’s also a defensive-minded midfielder, although he does also have the capacity to venture forwards.
And, of course, Wolves have seen Morgan Gibbs-White flourish on loan at Sheffield United in 2021/22.
Bruno Lage wants to work with him ahead of 2022/23, and it’s possible he could now be ready for regular first-team minutes.
Gibbs-White is an attacking midfielder, who could work well playing as a number 10.
A new Palhinha, Doucoure and Gibbs-White midfield would have a fantastic balance for Wolves
Presuming Neves leaves and Joao Moutinho has more of a reduced role if he stays, then this would be a really exciting new-look midfield at Molineux.
You have Palhinha to act as the shield in front of the defence. The star is physical and disciplined, and could provide really good protection, which would be needed if Wolves played with a back four.
Doucoure is defensive-minded, but is less fixed than Palhinha. He has the potential to push further up the field and apply pressure.
He’s got a great engine, gets about the pitch well and is a solid ball-winner. And not only that, he has a very powerful shot on him. So if he did venture forward he would provide some attacking threat.
And Wolves fans know what Gibbs-White brings to the table. He’s now shown he can provide goals and assists from advanced midfield positions.
So potentially Wolves could boast a new-look midfield with excellent balance in 2022/23.
Hopefully Fosun can deliver if Neves is to depart.
