Why Wolves potentially face a challenging December 2025 and January 2026

Wolves enjoyed a productive January 2025 transfer window in the end.

After the win over Aston Villa, Wolves missed out on Kevin Danso to Tottenham Hotspur, which had supporters concerned.

But the club responded well on transfer deadline day, with Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga both signing for Wolves.

Munetsi is essentially the replacement for Mario Lemina, and Nasser Djiga becomes another option for Vitor Pereira in defence, after Emmanuel Agbadou arrived a few weeks ago.

Wolves’ squad is looking pretty healthy right now. But later this year, the club could find themselves in a somewhat challenging position.

Wolves currently have five players who could go to AFCON

In December of this year, the latest AFCON tournament will take place in Morocco.

It runs from the 21st until January 18.

Now this is something that could really affect Wolves because at the moment, the club have five international players of teams who will be playing at the tournament.

They are Rayan Ait-Nouri (Algeria), Boubacar Traore (Mali), and then the three January signings Agbadou (Ivory Coast), Djiga (Burkina Faso) and Munetsi (Zimbabwe).

Tawanda Chirewa – who’s just sealed a loan move to Huddersfield Town – is also capped by Zimbabwe, but hasn’t yet established himself as a key first-teamer at Molineux.

Defending champions Ivory Coast didn’t actually include Agbadou in their last AFCON squad, and so he missed out on winning the title with his nation last time around.

But he played five full games out of six in their qualification campaign for the 2025/26 tournament, and is highly likely to be called up for the upcoming finals.

Djiga’s nation Burkina Faso were actually the first team to qualify for the finals (aside from hosts Morocco). He played three of their six qualifiers.

A lot can happen before next AFCON tournament

It will be interesting to see the make-up of Wolves’ squad later in the year.

There are months to go until the tournament, and plenty will likely happen before it kicks off.

Wolves have to secure their Premier League safety first. Failure to do so could see a number of players depart, especially the likes of Ait-Nouri and Agbadou.

Ait-Nouri is likely to have a lot of transfer interest anyway in the summer regardless of what division Wolves are in. So it’s possible he could be another team’s player by the time AFCON rolls around.

But it’s certainly an interesting situation to consider, and one that could potentially be quite challenging, especially if all these five players at still at Wolves beyond the summer. They could very possibly all go to Morocco mid-season.

Hopefully, Wolves are in a strong position (and still in the Premier League) when it’s time for the tournament.
