Why Matheus Cunha’s unselfish act vs Man United has given Wolves a major advantage in the race for Premier League survival

Matheus Cunha may have just saved Wolves’ season with one specific act he did vs Man United.

One of the highlights of Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Man United came right at the end. With seconds to spare, a brilliant Tommy Doyle ball sent Cunha through with only the goalkeeper to beat.

However, despite being in the form of his career, the Brazilian opted to slide the ball to Hwang Hee-Chan to end his goal drought.

The goal had been a long time coming for the South Korean international who had not scored in this campaign until Boxing Day.

However, the implications of the goal drought ending could be bigger than first thought as Wolves enter 2025.

It’s safe to say that Hwang has not had a very good 2024. Before United, the South Korean international had gone 15 games in Old Gold without hitting the net. His last was in a 5-1 defeat to Man City at the end of the 2023/24 season.

This was despite the attacker being in fantastic form this time last year before an injury in the Asia Cup halted his performances.

Since then, fans have been openly critical of Hwang’s form after he has struggled to make an impact from the bench on multiple occasions.

Yet, going into the second half of the campaign, supporters could be set to see a resurgence of the attacker’s form.

Since his move to Wolves in 2021, many of Hwang’s goals have come in specific periods. His first four goals for the club came in his first six Premier League matches before he failed to find the net again until 11 games later.

A similar trend followed last season, with Hwang netting 11 of his 13 goals before 2024. Therefore, it is easy to deduce that the attacker is very much a form player.

Now, with 2025 around the corner, Wolves face a big issue. Starman Cunha is facing a ban for his brawl vs Ipswich.

The FA are yet to state how long the Brazilian will be suspended for which allowed him to play vs Leicester and Man United. However, the attacker is likely to miss a chunk of games in 2025 as well as potentially the match against Spurs.

Therefore, an in-form Hwang could be more important than ever going into the new year.

If the South Korean can make scoring goals a habit once more, it would no doubt put Wolves in a fantastic position to survive the drop.

Hopefully, Hwang can score another goal against the Spurs and increase his confidence further.
