Why £8.5m player could now slip into the shadows at Wolves, after being a regular starter

Wolves enjoyed a productive finish to the January transfer window and there is a renewed sense of optimism about the club – but the future doesn’t look great for one player.

Wolves brought in Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi on deadline day, with the duo following the earlier signing of Emmanuel Agbadou.

The three new recruits are tasked with improving Wolves and helping get the club away from the relegation zone.

Agbadou has already settled in at Wolves and really impressed fans.

Agbadou was recently named Wolves’ Player of the Month, and looks like a real bargain.

Djiga is yet to pay for Wolves but there is a feeling that he could soon be given some involvement by Pereira.

All of a sudden, Wolves are looking better defensively – but one man who might be set for some struggles going forward is Santiago Bueno.

Bueno has actually had a fair amount of involvement so far this season for Wolves.

The Uruguay international has made 21 appearances across all competitions for a total of 1649 minutes.

He has already played more minutes than the whole of last season (1390).

Before the Premier League game with Aston Villa, Bueno had started 11 games in a row for Wolves.

He was a regular in the team, with Yerson Mosquera ruled out of the season with injury, and Toti Gomes also picking up an injury recently.

But the picture has really changed now for Bueno.

Toti is back fit again, and Agbadou looks like he’ll be a mainstay for the rest of the season.

Pereira has shown he likes Matt Doherty on the right of the back three, and Dijga will also be an option going forward.

Pereira has hailed both Toti and Agbadou, and they are definite starters from this point onwards. But it would be a surprise if Bueno continued to play regularly.

Bueno needed strong display vs Blackburn but failed audition

Bueno started against Blackburn on Saturday, but was arguably Wolves’ worst player.

He only played the first-half, having picked up a booking inside 20 minutes.

The £8.5 million signing (BBC Sport) looked uncomfortable on the right of the back three, and his lack of pace and mobility was exposed.

Santiago Bueno vs Blackburn
Minutes played – 45
Touches – 35
Passes completed – 22/25 (88%)
Duels won – 2/7 (29%)
Yellow cards – 1
Sofascore rating – 6.5 (lowest of any Wolves player)

Speaking about his showing on Sunday, journalist Liam Keen said (via Shots TV): “He was beaten for pace on that right-hand side too many occasions. I don’t think he was helped by Semedo’s positioning at times. But equally, he’s got to look after himself and I thought he was far too slow to react, lost too many duels and was beaten far too easily.

“Gets a poor booking and gets hooked at half-time and it was pretty much as bad as it could get. it was a really poor performance.”
