What Marshall Munetsi has already done in training suggests Wolves may have struck gold

A frantic transfer deadline day at Wolves saw Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi become the second and third new additions to Vitor Pereira’s squad.

Djiga signed a 5.5-year contract at Wolves, joining from Red Star Belgrade, while Munetsi’s contract is 3.5 years after arriving from Stade Reims.

The Old Gold left it late but Pereira can be pleased with the business he completed and the duo have since linked up with the Wolves first-team squad.

Ahead of Wolves FA Cup clash against Blackburn Rovers, there is hope from supporters that they’ll see their newest signings in action.

That being said, Pereira revealed that Munetsi has only trained once while Djiga will have his first session on Saturday before the squad heads to Ewood Park.

Marshall Munetsi ran the most of any Wolves player in one training session

Despite only being introduced to the squad this week, Munetsi has already made an instant impression on Pereira and his teammates.

According to the Portuguese boss, in just his first training session at the club, the Zimbabwe international ran the most of any player.

“Marshall has this pace, he was the player that ran the most in the last training session,” Pereira said on Friday via the E&S. “He brings pace and that’s why we went for him.”

The Wolves manager also praised the club for the work they did in the transfer window to land Emmanuel Agbadou, Munetsi and Djiga.

“The squad now has more balance and more solutions,” Pereira added. “Physically we’re stronger and I think the club did good work, I’m happy.

“They will need some time to adapt but physically they are strong and it’s a physical league. Of course you also need the tactical and technical level but I believe these two players can add something to the squad. We are more competitive inside and this is important for us.”

Munetsi is the complete midfielder

Pereira needed some extra legs and energy in his engine room for the remainder of the campaign. Munetsi already outrunning the rest of his teammates suggests he can cover every blade of grass alongside the likes of Joao Gomes and Andre.

But the 28-year-old was brought to Molineux for more than just his work off the ball, as he’s also proficient in the opposition’s box, ranking high amongst midfielders in Europe for his attacking data.

Statistics per 90 past yearPercentile rank vs midfielders across Europe
0.19 non-penalty goalsTop 10%
0.20 non-penalty xGTop 5%
1.71 total shotsTop 13%
2.88 touches (att pen.)Top 9%
2.06 aerials wonTop 6%

Munetsi’s goalscoring prowess is shades of Ruben Neves, who lit up the touchpaper on numerous occasions at Wolves with several long-range thunderbolts.

The Wolves hierarchy may have finally filled that void with their all-action midfield signing, with supporters undoubtedly encouraged by his profile.
