Vitor Pereira has to trust £13m Wolves star now it is clear that another man is not good enough

While the overwhelming fallout from Wolves’ 1-1 draw away to Tottenham has been positive, there were a couple of negatives spotted throughout proceedings.

The performance of Jhon Arias is an exciting takeaway from London, and Alan Smith labelled the player as ‘special’ following his display.

Of course, the equalising goal in added time was the biggest disappointment of the night, and it did remove some of the positivity surrounding Wolves’ performance.

However, while many of the Wolves players put on an impressive showing, there was one player who was lacklustre, and that could offer a pathway for an unlikely hero.

Hwang Hee-chan has been poor for Wolves over the last few months

Hwang Hee-chan was far off the pace compared to the rest of the Wolves players against Tottenham.

The Korean struggled to stamp his authority on proceedings and was largely anonymous throughout the first half.

It was no surprise when Vitor Pereira opted to take Hee-chan off after just 45 minutes and in truth, the attacker has been out of form for quite some time.

He has scored just three goals under the Portuguese head coach’s tenure and has often found himself on the bench.

Despite being typically out of favour, it was only natural for Pereira to select Hwang against Tottenham, as in the new four-back system, the player is the obvious option out wide.

However, Rodrigo Gomes could make a case to play there going forward.

Rodrigo Gomes should start over Hwang Hee-chan at left wing

Gomes arrived at Wolves in a deal worth around £13 million last summer under Gary O’Neil, and he has primarily been used as a wingback.

However, the Portuguese is also capable of playing as a winger. In all competitions, Gomes is Wolves’ joint top scorer, sharing the current accolade with Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Despite playing as a wingback, he has shown a great desire to affect proceedings in the final third, and there is no reason to suggest he could not do that in a more consistent role that positions him in that area.

Vitor Pereira has talked about needing to find solutions, and with Jackson Tchatchoua impressing as of late and Hugo Bueno making the left-back role his own, Gomes could be an unlikely hero for him.

It could be yet another bold decision from Pereira, and it could massively pay off.
