Vitor Pereira decision vs Burnley highlights an underlying leadership problem at Wolves

Wolves named a new leadership group earlier in the season featuring four players, but now it appears there is an issue when it comes to the figureheads at the club.

Toti Gomes is the club captain, but recently he has found himself on the periphery of the Wolves‘ starting XI.

Matt Doherty, Joao Gomes, and Jose Sa are the other names in that group, and the latter showed some form of leadership when the goalkeeper addressed fans’ concerns outside Molineux.

However, against Burnley, none of the four featured, and that led to another player getting the captain’s armband, highlighting the big issue.

Wolves have had five different players wear the captain’s armband this season

Jorgen Strand Larsen was given the honour of being Wolves captain against Burnley, but that also made him the fifth player to wear the armband in just 11 matches.

There has been no consistent leader on the pitch and no cohesive figure to look to when things are tough.

All five players above offer something different on the pitch, and they all likely have different ways of leading, but a football club needs stability.

The constant rotation of the captaincy does not help a team when they are trying to overcome adversity, and Wolves’ results have been a reflection of that.

The performances have been far from great, albeit with a few exceptions, but either way the results have not come.

Many of the disappointing outcomes have come from late goals due to a lack of organisation and being switched off, a job a leader should prevent.

Vitor Pereira’s job is now on the line, if not immediately, and the lack of a consistent captain has played a role.

Wolves need consistent leadership on the pitch

Whether it is Vitor Pereira or a different manager who comes in, the decision to have a consistent captain on the pitch has to be made.

Shifting around the responsibility does not let players truly grow into a role that is so important in the game of football.

It is OK for one or two players to share the load, but the Old Gold are naming a new captain nearly every two games, and that is simply not a good standard to set.

Stability is key, and Wolves need to find the player who either always plays or starts most matches as having your club captain on the bench is a problem.
