Vitor Pereira and Gary O’Neil in agreement over major Fosun mistake – it could cost Wolves

Wolves fans are longing for progression as a football club, but in recent years, they’ve only witnessed regression under Fosun.

While former manager Nuno Espirito Santo is guiding Nottingham Forest towards Champions League football, Wolves are reminded of their previous success.

Nuno Santo helped the Old Gold qualify for the Europa League on two occasions following back-to-back seventh-place finishes in 2018/19 and 2019/20.

Since living through a golden generation at Molineux, Wolves have since taken a nosedive down the Premier League table.

Vitor Pereira’s men are in 17th position with a five-point buffer on 18th place Ipswich Town but eight adrift of West Ham, who are just one place above.

The best the Wanderers can hope for this term is narrowly surviving relegation, and one issue highlighted by Pereira explains their downfall.

Vitor Pereira bemoans Wolves’ lack of options from the bench vs Fulham

Following the highs of their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, the Wolves were beaten 2-1 by Fulham and were instantly brought back down to earth.

Wolves supporters gave Raul Jimenez a good reception, along with former winger Adama Traore, but it was an otherwise disappointing night for the hosts.

While the thousands of empty seats around Molineux symbolised their rapid decline, Pereira was also quick to bemoan his lack of squad depth as a factor which caused their defeat.

“This is a problem against a team that when they started to do the subs, they came with a lot of players with high quality, because they have these solutions in the squad. At this moment with the injuries for us, it’s difficult,” he said via Wolves official.

The Portuguese tactician felt that his opposite number, Marco Silva, was able to bring some game-changers from the bench, whereas the Wolves manager had limited options.

With the likes of Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan out injured, it’s clear to see why he raised this problem; however, this is an issue that has plagued the football club for a long time.

Gary O’Neil once sent a warning to Fosun over squad depth

Fosun have failed to equip several Wolves bosses with the correct tools to achieve success. Previous managers, including Gary O’Neil, were told to work with limited resources.

In April 2024, when Wolves suffered an injury crisis, O’Neil prewarned the owners that the club were ‘overloading’ their important players due to a lack of squad depth.

“We warned the club that we were overloading players,” O’Neil said via BBC Sport. “It was a small group and we were using them an awful lot, and there was a risk of our injury record getting worse in the second half of the season.

“On top of that, if we lost a couple of attackers, I explained to the club that we would be in a real difficult situation.

“From my point of view, an understanding of what my squad were giving and where we might end up, and [Sporting Director] Matt Hobbs was on board with that as well – a real clear message that we were overloading the players and we could have done with a bit more depth.”

Although Wolves were the second-highest spenders in the Premier League in January, capturing three new signings, Pereira is still encountering the same problem O’Neil had.

Unfortunately, for the club to progress up the Premier League table, significant investment is needed in the summer, otherwise, relegation feels inevitable.
