Three questions Gary O’Neil will have ahead of Arsenal

Wolves travel to Arsenal on Saturday as Gary O’Neil aims to cause an upset at the Emirates.

Last time out, Wolves were defeated in controversial fashion against Fulham and will now be looking to bounce back in the capital.

However, the odds may well be stacked against O’Neil with the visitors not traditionally doing well against the Gunners.

With Saturday’s game quickly approaching, we look at the three questions that will be on the manager’s mind ahead of the tie.

Who replaces Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina?

The pair both got suspended on Monday after they both picked up their fifth yellow card of the season

This means Wolves will be without their everpresent midfield duo for Saturday’s clash.

While Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is still available, there is clearly still a hole in the middle of the park.

Tommy Doyle and Bobucar Traore seem the most logical replacements for the pair. However, with Joe Hodge still out it is unlikely that O’Neil will start both midfielders due to depth problems.

The manager therefore is left with a choice, start Doyle or Traore and go to a midfielder two or start both and keep the three in the centre of the park.

Traore would definitely offer a physical presence against Arsenal. However, Doyle, in his recent appearances has also been impressive.

Do Wolves stick or twist the formation?

With multiple players out for the clash, O’Neil may look to revert to a back four.

As well as Joao Gomes and Lemina, Rayan Ait-Nouri is also unavailable after picking up an injury against Fulham.

A back four therefore may be Wolves’ best option for the fixture as it allows O’Neil’s side to have more quality on the bench.

This formation has seen success in recent games with it being deployed in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle in late October.

It may also allow players such as Pablo Sarabia to return to the starting XI after his amazing performance off the bench versus Spurs.

Craig Dawson’s return will also be a sigh of relief for O’Neil as the defender has now served his one-match suspension.

Should Wolves take the game to Arsenal?

It is no secret that this will be a tough tie for Wolves.

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League and have only lost one game so far this campaign.

With suspensions and injuries putting Wolves at a disadvantage, most would suspect Wolves to ‘park the bus’ come Saturday.

However, O’Neil has seen a great deal of success this season when he has taken the game to his so-called ‘better’ opponents.

On the opening day against Man United, the visitors had plenty of chances to go ahead and should have had a penalty in added time.

From here, Wolves have picked up two good draws against high-flying Aston Villa and Newcastle.

At Molineux, they have also memorably overcome both Man City and Spurs.

Despite the odds stacked against O’Neil’s side, he may be tempted to throw everything he has at Arsenal, in hopes of getting a result.
