Three Middlesbrough stars Wolves should consider if Rob Edwards becomes new manager

Wolves are stepping up their hunt for a new manager, with Rob Edwards the club’s current top target.

After Gary O’Neil withdrew from the process a couple of days ago, Wolves have now turned their attention to Edwards, despite twice publicly playing down the links.

Edwards wouldn’t be drawn on the Wolves links in his Tuesday press conference. He was then asked again about the speculation after his side’s draw with Leicester City, and said that nothing had changed for him.

But Wolves are now making an approach for Edwards in the hope of naming him as Vitor Pereira’s successor.

Some Wolves fans have already reacted poorly to a potential Edwards appointment, but it’s looking like he’s the man they want.

And with that, Molineux News looks at three players from Middlesbrough who Wolves may push for in January if Edwards was at the helm.

Hayden Hackney

Hayden Hackney just had to be on this list, since he’s a player Wolves have reportedly already looked at.

Wolves showed interest in Hackney at the end of the last transfer window, but ultimately couldn’t sign him as Boro’s stance was too firm.

Liam Keen has previously reported Wolves are expected to push for a midfielder again in January – and it would be fantastic if Hackney came to Molineux, as he’s widely considered one of the best players in the English second tier at the moment.

It would be a very difficult task to sign him, because Hackney is crucial to Boro’s push for promotion.

But Hackney would potentially be more attainable if Edwards became the new Wolves manager.

Tommy Conway

Tommy Conway is actually a player who’s been linked with a move to Wolves before.

Conway was of interest to Wolves while he was at Bristol City, so perhaps the club have kept eyes on him since.

Last term, Scotland international Conway hit 13 goals in 36 Championship appearances. So far in 2025/26 he has two to his name, and one assist.

In the summer, Edwards raved about Conway, saying (via Teesside Live): “I love him. I think he’s an incredible guy and he works so hard. He’s got an amazing attitude and in training so far he’s been absolutely devastating.

“He scores goals all the time in every kind of game situation that we have. I’m really looking forward to working with him and I’ve got really high hopes that he’s going to have a really good season for us.”

With past praise like this, Edwards may well look at Conway as a potential option for Wolves in January, and there is added appeal in that he can play as a striker, off a main striker or out wide.

Aidan Morris

Morris has been a regular this season, and was recently credited by Teesside Live as being one of, if not, Boro’s best performer over the course of the season so far.

Hackney gets a lot of the credit, but the USA midfielder has regularly come in for praise from fans and has helped the club reach second place in the table.

Edwards is all about high energy and pressing, and Morris is very well-suited to his manager’s ultra-aggressive style.

The Athletic recently published some impressive data from fbref about Morris, which was that the 23-year-old is one of the most effective midfielders in the Championship. They said: “Among midfielders in the Championship, Morris ranks high in tackles (92nd percentile), pass completion (96th percentile), progressive passes (90th percentile) and expected assists (80th percentile).”

Wolves will perhaps need to be rotating Andre and Joao Gomes a bit more as the season wears on, and all-rounder Morris could make for a smart addition.
