Three issues Fosun must address in the January window as Rob Edwards’ Wolves era begins

The January transfer window cannot come soon enough for both Rob Edwards and Wolves.

It is perhaps the most important window for the Old Gold for quite some time, with relegation looking more than likely.

There is time to turn things around, and reports that Fosun will back Edwards in January offer a little hope.

The new head coach will need as much help as he can get, as the current squad are not in the best place to mount a charge out of the drop zone.

The ship must be stabilised until then, and that will allow Wolves to add much-needed quality across the board to aid their efforts.

However, there are three key things that must be properly addressed in that window for Rob Edwards to succeed.

Fix lack of non-homegrown players in squad

If Wolves are to make any signings without any outgoings, those players must either be eligible to be included in the under-21 list or be a homegrown talent.

Wolves currently only have six out of eight allowable homegrown players, and that has left them with an official squad of 23 instead of 25.

It also means players such as Tawanda Chirewa likely won’t be allowed to leave on loan for game time.

The club need players who can be plug and play, and recruiting from outside of England, or players who have never played in the country, is a major gamble.

Many of the summer signings have failed to adapt, and not a single one of those had prior experience in England.

Let’s hope a big lesson was learnt.

Which position do Wolves need to prioritise in January?

Add more creativity to the Wolves squad

The Wanderers do not create chances, and that has been a major problem.

They sit at the bottom of the league in terms of big chances created (9) and have scored the fewest goals this season with seven.

A signing or two in January to address their final-third woes is absolutely essential, and there are some exciting options for Wolves to look to.

Additionally, out-of-favour Dwight McNeil could be a shrewd deal for Fosun to complete. Either way, Fosun must not stand still, and they have to address this issue.

There are some options already in the squad, such as Fer Lopez, and hopefully Edwards trusts him more than Vitor Pereira had done.

Experienced options are needed

There is not much experience across the Wolves squad, and leadership has been a big issue this season.

Too often the team have lost composure in key moments in games, particularly conceding late goals to Tottenham, Brighton and Burnley.

Without strong voices, games have slipped away from the Old Gold.

If Rob Edwards is going to pull the club out of the dire situation they face, he needs players who can step up and rally the team.

Wolves should not turn to younger options but rather ones that have decent experience in football and at the top level.

Seasoned pros could be the difference between picking up a point in a match or getting all three.
