2024 was another rollercoaster calendar year for Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club.
The club were in such a promising position on January 1 and were daring to dream about European football, and even going deep in the FA Cup.
But injuries took hold of the squad and Wanderers completely lost all momentum from around February onwards.
The high of beating West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup was followed by a devastating low of losing to Coventry City in the quarter-final, having been minutes away from a trip to Wembley.
Wolves never quite recovered from that day, and now find themselves in a very worrying position.
But despite a lot of lows this year, a few players have really shone in old gold. Molineux News presents the best three Wolves players of 2024.
#1 – Matheus Cunha

Cunha has largely been a revelation for Wolves this calendar year.
The Brazilian enjoyed the best season of his career in 2023/24, and his form has mostly continued into 2024/25.
He’s thrived for Wolves, and Cunha is now Wolves’ best player following the departure of Pedro Neto in the summer.
The star is a match-winner, and the man everyone looks to to make something happen. And he so often delivers.
There’ve been countless times this year where Cunha has come to Wolves rescue, and there have been moments of genuine brilliance – who can forget that outrageous solo effort against Nottingham Forest back in April.
Hopefully, Cunha will be sticking around at Wolves for the whole of 2025.
#2 – Joao Gomes
Joao Gomes was terrific for Wolves last season alongside Mario Lemina in midfield.
Lemina probably got a few more plaudits than the Brazilian, but Gomes was just as effective in Wolves’ engine room thanks to his dynamism.
Gomes was branded Wolves’ best-ever ball-winner by Dave Edwards back in February, and few will argue against that.
Wolves have obviously struggled in the first half of the 2024/25 season, but £15 million star Gomes has been far from one of the worst players.
Granted, he’s had some poor games here and there. But his energy and tenacity are always and he’s someone who must just be a nightmare to play against.
#3 – Rayan Ait-Nouri
Ait-Nouri has enjoyed a pretty solid 2024 on the whole.
The Algeria international was a regular for Gary O’Neil last season and chipped in with goals and assists, and regularly dazzled with his brilliant footwork.
He’s done that again so far this season, although there has been some questionable defending at times.
But Ait-Nouri is undoubtedly a talent, and is still many years away from his peak.
He is potentially one of the most technically gifted players Wolves have ever had, and supporters will hope that he sticks around for another year at Molineux.
Honourable mentions: Nelson Semedo, Mario Lemina
