The one position Wolves need to strengthen in the summer is one no one is talking about

Wolves are building a squad worthy of staying in the Premier League but the end of the season will require more additions.

Vitor Pereira enjoyed a busy January transfer window…

Mario Lemina left to re-join Galatasaray, and Wolves signed Emmanual Agbadou at the start of the window before landing Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga on Deadline Day.

Having bolstered their options at centre-back and in defensive midfield, the Old Gold are likely to target a new striker and left-sided full-back in the summer.

How much they’ll be able to spend will depend on whether Matheus Cunha’s new £62.5 million release clause is triggered.

There is another position Pereira should be targeting, though, and it’s one very few are talking about.

Wolves may need to sign a new goalkeeper

Although Wolves have four senior goalkeepers in their squad, Jose Sa is the first-choice shot-stopper by quite some distance.

Sam Johnstone has started seven Premier League games this season, but all came under Gary O’Neil. His only appearance under Pereira came in the FA Cup against Bristol City.

Daniel Bentley and Tom King are nothing more than emergency backups and won’t play important roles.

Sa is obviously the Wolves number one, but he’ll be 33 by next season’s mid-way point, and with just two years left on his contract, it seems unlikely he’ll be offered a new deal before then.

So, the Old Gold’s need for a new keeper is becoming clear. While Sa should remain the number one next season, Pereira should be looking to sign the Portuguese keeper’s eventual successor.

Time to look to the future

The best teams usually have two goalkeepers capable of being their number one. That isn’t the case at Wolves.

Wolves are expected to retain their top-flight status, so they should find it easier to sign the sport’s better players.

If Pereira goes into next season with the same four goalkeepers, there will be huge concerns over the impact an injury to Sa would have.

Following Wolves’ status as the Premier League’s second-biggest January spenders, there is hope for progress next season compared to the current one, and signing a new goalkeeper will be essential to achieving that.
