The 25/26 season has exposed one problem with Wolves duo Andre and Joao Gomes

Andre and Joao Gomes are two fine players, but this season has exposed one issue about the Wolves midfield duo.

It has been a season of struggle for Wolves, who are now starting to get cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table.

It’s nine points to safety, and it is going to take a miracle for Wolves to stay up – no club has ever survived with this points tally after 12 games before.

One of the biggest problems Wolves have had this season revolves around creativity.

Wolves have scored just seven goals so far in the Premier League, which is a worrying return – it is easily the lowest number of goals scored in the competition this season.

Of course, there has been a particular focus on Wolves’ forward players.

But the struggles this season have also shone a light on Andre and Joao Gomes.

Wolves fans would likely say that Andre and Joao Gomes are the two best players in the team.

Both are Brazilian internationals, and we have seen a high level from both players since they arrived at the club.

But they have always been quite similar in the way they play. Andre is more of a passer and plays slightly deeper, whereas Joao Gomes operates more as a number eight.

But both are essentially workhorses and ball-winners.

There has never been much in the way of creativity, perhaps because there hasn’t needed to be, given the players that were previously around them.

But now those players aren’t there any more, and Andre and Gomes’ lack of creativity has come more to the fore.

Andre has never scored or assisted for Wolves in 50 appearances. And Gomes’ last contribution in the Premier League came all the way back in February when he scored against Fulham in a 2-1 defeat.

According to Fotmob, Gomes has an expected assists metric of just 0.5 this season, with Andre even lower at 0.2.

Wolves need more from two senior players

Neither Andre nor Gomes have been anywhere near their best this season, which is the case for most players in the team.

For Wolves to have any chance of staying up, it will be paramount for the pair of them to find form again and sustain it for as long as possible.

As they are the two midfielders who pretty much play every game for Wolves, they need to try and boost their creativity during this period.

Gomes is the player who takes up more advanced positions, so perhaps it’s more on him.

But we saw how Adam Wharton showed creativity during his masterclass on Saturday from deeper positions, and Andre would do well to follow his example.
