Six things we learned from Wolves’ Carabao Cup win over Everton as Andre dazzles at Molineux

Wolves are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Everton 2-0 at Molineux.

Vitor Pereira masterminded a much-needed victory using a back four against the Toffees, with Marshall Munetsi and Tolu Arokodare on target for the hosts.

Wolves weathered some Everton pressure in the second-half after enjoying a strong first 45.

But the players got the job done, and fans now hope to see this result and performance prompt a turnaround.

Here are six takeaways from tonight’s game.

Ladislav Krejci is a class act

It was the first time Wolves fans got to see Ladislav Krejci in defence – and what a classy showing it was from the Czech international.

Krejci was totally composed throughout and barely put a foot wrong, bringing about some much needed calm.

Dave Edwards recently said Krejci doesn’t look flustered when he plays, and that assessment looks spot on.

Simply put, he must keep his place in the defence against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Wolves can play with a back four

As is often the case now, Pereira’s team selection did raise some eyebrows.

It wasn’t immediately clear how Wolves would be playing – some thought Jean-Ricner Bellegarde might have been deployed as a wing-back.

But it turned out it was a back four – and Wolves did look fairly comfortable in the system.

That Wolves won playing with this formation surely suggests we’ll be seeing it again.

Andre reminded us all of his quality – he cannot be dropped again

Before this game, it was safe to say that Andre had had a lukewarm start to the new season.

But fans have still been surprised at Pereira dropping the Brazilian a couple of times, given how good we know he can be.

Andre was superb against Everton, especially in the first-half, and has traits no other player in the squad has.

He reminded everyone tonight how good he is, and simply cannot be dropped if Wolves are to pick up points in the league – he just makes Wolves tick.

Worrying signs for David Moller Wolfe

David Moller Wolfe was a £10 million signing for Wolves in the summer, but he has not had a good start at Molineux.

Against Leeds he did not even make the squad and tonight he didn’t get on against Everton.

He was signed as the Rayan Ait-Nouri replacement, but so far he has not made much of an impression.

Hugo Bueno is firmly ahead of him in the pecking order right now, and potentially Rodrigo Gomes too – the Norwegian has work to do.

Sam Johnstone deserves to start over Jose Sa

Sam Johnstone replaced Jose Sa against Everton, and the Englishman again made an impression.

There were a couple of dicey passes, but the 32-year-old was largely very solid, as he was against Newcastle.

We know Pereira likes Sa, but Johnstone surely now has a strong case to start against Spurs.

Tolu Arokodare ice-cold in front of goal

Tolu Arokodare was one of several players who did not make much of an impact against Leeds United at the weekend.

But against Everton he finally announced himself before the Molineux crowd, scoring Wolves’ second goal in impressive fashion.

Arokodare was released by Joao Gomes, and the Nigerian produced an ice-cold finish, chipping the ball delicately over Mark Travers.

Wolves players have to try and replicate this in the Premier League, as Arokodare is clearly a goalscorer.
