Five things we learned as Wolves lose late on against Fulham

Wolves travelled to Craven Cottage on Monday night where they would go on to lose 3-2 in controversial fashion to Fulham.

The scores went in level at half-time after Matheus Cunha cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s early opener.

However, two controversial second-half Fulham penalties on either side of Hwang Hee-Chan’s equaliser meant that Wolves came away with nothing.

Here are five things that we learned from the game.

Craig Dawson a miss for Wolves

The centre-back was clearly a miss for Wolves on Monday.

The visitors had some shaky moments, especially just after Fulham’s opener.

Jose Sa had to make a series of good saves to ensure Wolves weren’t 2-0 down almost instantly.

Alex Iwobi found too much space far too often with Dawson’s experience clearly needed to keep the defence disciplined.

His return to the starting XI against Arsenal is certainly needed now he has completed his suspension.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will be a Wolves fan-favourite

The midfielder is just magical.

On the ball, Bellegarde is always looking to make something happen.

His play for the equaliser was sensational.

After receiving the ball out wide, the Frenchman had the talent and intelligence to cut in and drift past the defender before sending in a pinpoint cross to Matheus Cunha.

On current form, Bellegarde could well be one of the signings of the season, not just at Wolves, but in the Premier League as a whole.

Gary O’Neil and Matt Hobbs clearly spent Matheus Nunes’ money well.

VAR still shows no signs of helping Wolves

Another penalty decision that VAR failed to overturn.

At this point, it comes as no surprise.

After Tom Cairney went down under Nelson Semedo’s challenge, VAR had another important decision to make in a Wolves game.

Upon replays, it appeared that the defender made contact with the ball and had minimal contact with the Fulham player.

Yet, after multiple views of the incident, VAR still upheld the decision.

VAR then came into play again to give Fulham another in the 94th minute.

It was another highly questionable decision especially due to the fact that the on-field didn’t initially give it.

Yet, VAR clearly deemed this a clear and obvious error and gave Fulham the opportunity to find a late winner which Willian took with open arms.

Hwang Hee-Chan continues to find the net

After going season after season without a clinical attacker, Wolves have finally found a goalscorer.

The South Korean international has been on fire so far this campaign and has netted seven times in the Premier League this season.

His tally already beats Wolves’ top scorer last season with Ruben Neves and Daniel Podence only managing six.

With Hwang only managing nine Premier League goals in his previous two seasons combined, you’d place your bets that he’d at least level that by the end of 2023.

Wolves still struggle against teams around them

Wolves have only beaten two teams below them so far this season.

Those victories came in a fortunate 1-0 win away to Everton and a 2-1 win against 10-man Bournemouth.

Otherwise, O’Neil’s side have lost to Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Fulham, albeit the latter two controversially, while also drawing to Luton.

For a side that has managed to beat both Manchester City and Spurs this season, there is a real inconsistency in results.

O’Neil will certainly have to rectify this if he wants his side to break into the top half this season.
