Julen Lopetegui is the current favourite to succeed Bruno Lage as the next manager of Wolves.
The Spaniard is now officially unattached, after he left Sevilla last night following the 4-1 defeat to Champions League.
The 56-year-old could not bow out with a win, but he still got a fantastic reception after the final whistle.
The club’s sporting director Monchi led Lopetegui out onto the pitch so he could receive a warm ovation from the crowd.
It had already been decided before the game that he would be leaving.
Afterwards, Lopetegui confirmed his departure, and the club then made the official announcement.
Lopetegui had not enjoyed a very good season in 2022/23.
That defeat to Dortmund was the club’s sixth loss so far this term of their nine games in total.
It really has been a struggle for them.
But Lopetegui has bowed out with great respect from the supporters for all that he achieved at the club since his appointment in June 2019. That says a lot considering how poor their start has been this term.
Last night, Sevilla’s official Twitter account released an emotional video that included some of his best moments at the club.
The six-minute video is a brilliant watch, and really does show Lopetegui to be a passionate, motivational and warm individual.
From the montage it is very clear that he was highly respected by the players.
Potentially, Wolves stand to make a really fantastic appointment here following the dismal past few months under Bruno Lage.
Lopetegui could reinvigorate Wolves after struggles under Lage
We have been hearing how things have not been particularly good behind the scenes at Wolves for the past couple of months.
It was claimed earlier this week that Lage had lost the dressing room at the end of the 2021/22 season. It has also been reported his methods did not strike a chord with some members of the squad.
Lopetegui may have just been technically sacked.
But it is very clear he departs Sevilla on very good terms.
He is obviously a very good coach to have had the success he’s had at the club.
But Lopetegui the human being might just be exactly what Wanderers need at the moment.
There are many Wolves stars playing within themselves right now and lacking confidence. And the former Spain manager might just be the man to reinvigorate the place.
