Wolves’ defence has been fairly decent in recent times.

The end of 2019/20 and the very start of 2020/21 saw the backline really tighten up at Molineux, with Conor Coady’s consistency arguably the biggest positive.

That said, there is one player currently playing in the Premier League Wolves were linked with in the past, who looks a serious player.

Ruben Dias signed for Manchester City last summer for a reported fee of £65 million from Benfica, which was offset by Nicolas Otamendi moving the other way for £13.7 million.

Huge money, which has brought about huge expectation, but so far, Dias is looking worth every single penny.

With Dias in their side, City have conceded just nine times in all competitions, underlining the hugely reassuring impact he has had since moving to the Etihad.

Against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last night he was colossal, with Pep Guardiola hailing his impact as ‘special’ after the game (Manchester City official).

Wolves have some great defensive options, but one does wonder what might have been.

The one that got away?

Wolves were said to be in the hunt for Dias in the summer of 2019 (Express & Star).

With him being part of Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, there was feeling that a move to Molineux was a genuine possibility.

Perhaps ultimately Dias – who now earns around £115,000-a-week at City (Spotrac) was always going to be too expensive, even a year before his £65 million move to City.

But observing the start he has made at the Etihad, it’s difficult not to be green with envy knowing Wolves were once linked.
