Wolverhampton Wanderers drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the Premier League last night.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side extended their unbeaten run to five games, after Ruben Neves equalised superbly in the second-half after Magpies skipper Jamaal Lascelles had opened the scoring.

Wolves struggled to get going in the game as has been the case many times this season.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron caused real problems in the first-half, and Newcastle might have gone two or three goals to the good before half-time had they been more clinical.

But Almiron going off injured at half-time undoubtedly helped shift momentum back towards Wolves though, and Saint-Maximin also departing saw the visitors take control.

But Newcastle were not without their moments in the second-half, and there was one in particular that had hearts in mouths for Wolves fans.

Jacob Murphy’s ball in from the right found Joelinton who looked certain to score from around the penalty spot, but Wolves defender Romain Saiss was on hand to block the goal-bound shot.

Extend Saiss’ contract ASAP

It was superb defending from Saiss.

To have the intelligence to take up the possession he did in that moment was the mark of a top player, and his actions saved a point for Wolves in the end.

Saiss’ £22,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) expires this summer, but according to the Express & Star, the club do have an option to extend it by a further year.

The Moroccan’s latest heroics are surely an indicator that the club should be moving to take up that option.

It would just make such little sense to lose a player of such versatility, experience and leadership.
