A look back on Wolves’ best three games of 2024 including a derby win and some Matheus Cunha magic.
2024 has been a chaotic year for Wolves. Back in January, the club were dreaming of European football under the guidance of Gary O’Neil.
Yet, fast forward to the year’s end and O’Neil has been sacked with Vitor Pereira tasked with guiding the Old Gold to Premier League safety.
However, throughout the last 12 months, the club have overseen plenty of wins that will live long in the memories of the fanbase.
As a result, Molineux News has highlighted the best three of the year with Matheus Cunha finding the net in each one.
West Brom 0-2 Wolves – January
At the peak of O’Neil’s reign, Wolves finally faced their fierce rivals West Brom in front of a crowd for the first time since 2012.
Going into the Hawthorns, the Old Gold were the favourites for the FA Cup tie and hoped to finally see victory at the Baggies’ stadium for the first time since 1996.
In a tense match, Pedro Neto opened the scoreline late in the first half after a quick breakaway allowed the winger to bury the ball into the net from the edge of the box.
Cunha then finished off the game in a similar manner as he hooked onto Max Kilman’s long ball before converting the chance late on.
Wolves’ second prompted violent scenes from the home crowd which resulted in the game halting.
However, after nearly a 40-minute delay, O’Neil’s side then saw out the game and secured a memorable victory.
Chelsea 2-4 Wolves – February
Little over a month later, Wolves travelled to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea. The cracks had begun to appear in O’Neil’s side after a 4-3 defeat to Man United, however, fans still had hope that they could come away with something against the Blues.
It was a poor start from Wolves as Cole Palmer netted the opener before Cunha levelled the scoreline just three minutes later.
Wolves then took the lead just before half-time as Rayan Ait-Nouri’s strike deflected in off Axel Disasi.
Cunha extended the visitor’s lead just after the hour mark before he netted a hat trick from the penalty spot late on.
Thiago Silva got a goal back late on but it was too little too late as Wolves had just humiliated Chelsea in the capital.
Wolves 2-0 Man United – December
Fast forward to the current season and by December, everything had changed. O’Neil had been sacked with Wolves stranded in the relegation zone with Pereira being appointed to try and save the Old Gold.
The Portuguese manager’s first few games were magical as he pulled the club out of the drop zone despite being five points from safety when he took charge.
While we could have opted for the 3-0 away victory to Leicester City the game prior, Molineux News has chosen to go for his following win vs Man United.
Pereira announced himself to the home crowd in style as the hosts dominated the Red Devils who barely had a chance.
Cunha scored the opener directly from a corner in the first half after Bruno Fernandes had been given his marching orders for a second bookable offence earlier on.
Hwang Hee-Chan then confirmed the win in added time to help show Wolves’ fortunes were on the up going into 2025.
