Nuno Espirito Santo gives Wolves no favours as Leeds vs West Ham result not ideal, here’s why

Former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has not helped his old side at all in West Ham’s 2-1 loss to Leeds United.

It was the first of two crucial relegation six-pointers this weekend, with Wolves vs Burnley set to follow on Sunday afternoon, but a win for Leeds was the last thing the Wanderers wanted.

Vitor Pereira’s future hangs in the balance, but more notably, so does the Old Gold’s in the Premier League, and that result has made survival all the more difficult.

Nuno Espirito Santo has entered a tough situation at the Hammers, but his former supporters at Molineux should have been hoping for him to do them a favour, but that was not the case.

Here is why West Ham losing to Leeds is terrible for Wolves.

Leeds United win widens gap among original relegation favourites

Leeds United’s 2-1 win against West Ham was the last thing Wolves needed in the battle to survive.

Daniel Farke’s side have now extended their gap above the bottom three and are moving closer to the magic number of 40 points needed to survive, as per BBC Sport.

Previous seasons have seen Wolves survive due to there being three teams worse than them and the promoted sides struggling, but that has yet to be the case.

With Leeds United’s win, it is becoming increasingly harder to find three sides that are playing at a worse level than the Wanderers.

Leeds United’s win puts them on 11 points, over a quarter of the way there to the expected tally for staying up. Additionally, Sunderland are sat on 14 points.

At the bottom, Nottingham Forest have the quality in their squad to turn things around, and early signs from Sean Dyche point to them turning a corner.

The new Forest head coach pulled off an impressive 2-0 win against Porto in the Europa League.

Sean Dyche could have been a good option for Wolves should Pereira be let go, but that boat has now sailed.

Wolves will need the teams around them and those tipped for relegation to drop points, and West Ham losing to Leeds has done them no favours whatsoever.

Yes, West Ham are now looking to be among those expected to be relegated, but Vitor Pereira needs more than just one side that is doomed for the Championship.

A draw would have been an excellent result, a West Ham win would have been OK, but a Leeds United win was the worst possible outcome.

The Wanderers need the gap at the bottom to be as slim as possible, and each week, it appears to be growing, and that has now turned up the pressure for Sunday.

Pressure well and truly high now

It keeps being said, but it is true: Wolves simply have to beat Burnley.

A loss would be nothing other than a disaster and could potentially see them end the weekend over seven points from safety in 17th place.

Meanwhile, a draw would not do them any favours in their chances of escaping. They could theoretically be nine points behind Leeds United at the end of the weekend, one of the prime candidates to go down.

At the minute, it only seems like Wolves and West Ham are truly in danger, with Burnley teetering on the edge.

The Clarets’ only wins have come against promoted opposition, and a win for Wolves would further pull them back down.

However, Pereira still needs more than just Burnley and West Ham to continue to struggle. Perhaps there will be a couple more surprises in the relegation fight; the Old Gold need it.
