Wolves could potentially see Nottingham Forest drop out of the race to sign Morgan Gibbs-White now that they have signed Jesse Lingard.
The Premier League new boys have been heavily linked with a move for the Wanderers star in recent weeks.
It was reported that they had made an approach to sign the 22-year-old, and that they would be willing to fork out £20 million for him.
It was then claimed Forest had made him one of their key targets.
But the newly promoted side have now moved to sign Jesse Lingard on a free transfer.
The attacking midfielder had run down his contract at Manchester United, but will remain a Premier League player having secured a move to the City Ground on a one-year deal.
Forest are reported to be paying him a whopping £200,000-a-week (Daily Mail).
That makes him by far and away their top earner.
This move now surely casts doubt on Forest’s potential to sign Gibbs-White this summer.
Lingard is an attacking midfielder, who is also capable of operating out wide.
Nottingham Forest are surely out of the running to sign Gibbs-White after signing Lingard
This deal has significance for Wolves in that, Forest are surely now unlikely to make a go of signing Gibbs-White.
The Wolves star and Lingard are very similar positionally, and so it doesn’t make a great deal of sense for Forest to sign both.
Of course, other teams could still make a move for Gibbs-White though.
But the hope is that Gibbs-White will ultimately end up staying at Wolves for 2022/23.
So far he has impressed in pre-season, and was even handed the captaincy yesterday for the Levante game.
