Many fans will not need reminding just how important Ruben Neves is to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Portugal international midfielder put in a complete performance in Wolves’ victory over Watford yesterday.

The central midfielder was at the heart of everything Wolves did, both on and off the ball. Therefore, it may not come as a surprise to see that the statistics backed this up.

According to FBRef, during their victory over the Hornets, Neves completed the most successful passes (66) and had the most touches (90).

He was equally effective without the ball. Neves led the way in pressures on the opposition (19) and successful tackles (4) for Wolves.

Although he was not directly involved in either of Wolves’ goals the ex-Porto man was key to maintaining Wolves’ high tempo.

Neves’s form will attract interest

If there is one caveat about Neves playing so well, it is that his list of admirers will continue to grow.

Over the past summer there was strong speculation linking him with moves to both Arsenal and Manchester United.

Neither of these moves seemed close to materialising. However, it appears a realistic prospect that more concrete interest will return at some point.

Wolves will be desperate to keep their star-man. However, it will be increasingly hard for the club to resist if the size of the offer rises and the player is intrigued by it.

In the meantime, all Wolves fans can do is enjoy his performances whilst they last.

Fortunately, the player seems very committed to the club. Not only is he one of the side’s top earners, but he is also very vocal in his support for Wolves.

Yesterday, he celebrated extra with the fans after Hwang Hee-chan’s goal. Also, he gave a very impassioned interview following Wolves’ last defeat to Manchester United.

For now, let us hope that he continues with these virtuoso performances.
