Munetsi will take the headlines, but 87-touch Wolves star was true hero in Brentford comeback

The Molineux outfit ended their Premier League campaign with a draw against Brentford, and one Wolves player was a particular standout on the day.

In what was a pretty mixed afternoon for Vitor Pereira’s side, Wolves rescued a draw at Molineux to end their run of three consecutive defeats.

After falling behind to a Bryan Mbeumo opener, Marshall Munetsi stepped up to the plate with a stunning equaliser midway through the second half.

Munetsi’s screamer will no doubt be the main talking point, but another of Wolves’ players deserves immense credit for getting them back into the game – namely, Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes was Wolves’ hero vs Brentford

Mbeumo’s first-half strike had many thinking Wolves’ barren run on the final day would continue, Gomes, however, had other ideas.

The Brazilian seemingly made it his mission to get his side back into the game, almost single-handedly driving Wolves up the pitch.

With an impressive 87 touches of the ball, Gomes dominated possession, helping pin Brentford back in the second half.

It wasn’t just on the ball in which the midfielder thrived though, also racking up 12 defensive actions with a staggering eight tackles in total.

It was these sorts of stats that earned the 24-year-old the highest match rating at Molineux, above the likes of Munetsi.

Gomes is a must-keep for Wolves this summer

Given that Wolves are already set to lose Matheus Cunha this summer, Fosun would be wise to adopt a hands-off approach when it comes to Gomes.

Tottenham have been linked with Gomes, alongside several other clubs, as the Brazilian’s performances continue to attract attention around Europe.

The Molineux outfit will be hoping that Gomes’ new deal will deter any interest this summer; that is no guarantee, however, given the riches of the Premier League.

It would be difficult for Wolves to replace Gomes, and Fosun should do their utmost to keep the midfielder at the club this summer.
