Major problem Gary O’Neil needs to solve this week

With Wolves preparing to face West Ham this weekend, there is one major problem that Gary O’Neil needs to address in preparation for their away trip.

Wolves had to settle for a 1-1 draw on Saturday against Nottingham Forest, with multiple players below-par.

After Matheus Cunha netted the equaliser just after the 30-minute mark, the Molineux side looked like they might go on to win the game. However, standards in the second period slipped, with the hosts producing few clear-cut chances.

The result was seen as a missed opportunity by many fans as the East Midlands side were out-of-sorts coming into the game. Wolves could have gone up to 10th with a victory, five points off the European spots.

Now, O’Neil must address on big issue before they head into West Ham.

The weekend’s result showed yet again that Wolves don’t perform at their usual standards when up against out-of-form teams.

The draw against Nottingham Forest was one of many games so far this season where O’Neil’s side have gone into the game with the expectation of a win. However, once again, this wasn’t the case.

Forest had lost their previous four fixtures before travelling to Molineux and lost 5-0 to Fulham in their last game. Manager Steve Copper was also on the verge of the sack going into the tie.

However, not only did Wolves not get the win, they were poor throughout. Their only period of dominance came at the end of the first half when Cunha scored.

Many would argue that Forest should have won the game with the visitors having plenty of chances to retake their lead.

This problem has been a common occurrence for Wolves all season. The club have dropped points against Sheffield United, Luton and Fulham who all went into the fixture on the back of a poor set of results.

Even in games that Wolves have won, O’Neil’s side haven’t done it convincingly. Their 1-0 victory against Burnley last week was a performance far below the recent standards the team has set.

Wolves are more than capable of playing brilliant football as shown against Man United, Man City and Spurs

With West Ham up next who just lost 5-0 to Fulham, Wolves must make sure that they do not provide the hosts a chance to bounce back.

Despite not getting all three points against Forest, it is good that the team isn’t losing when putting in a poor performance.

Many other teams may have lost that game, however, Wolves have now stretched their unbeaten run at Molineux to seven Premier League games.

Captain Max Kilman believes that this is something Wolves should look to build on as they prepare for the next fixture.

He told Wolves: “I think we were a bit sloppy, but we come away with a point and we’ve not lost at home again. We need to keep building from this and hopefully, we can push on for the next game.

“It was a tough game. The Premier League is such a tough league. Obviously, we wanted to do better, but still not losing is important. We need to build from here and go again.”
