Wolves are looking to build on their fantastic result of last weekend, against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Wanderers go into the game at St. James’ Park having just beaten Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Premier League.
There is optimism again around Wolves given the nature of the win over Spurs.
Julen Lopetegui made some bold but brilliant changes to his starting XI, and fans are excited to see him potentially work some magic again against the Magpies.
One of the changes he made against Spurs was to throw Matheus Cunha on to support Raul Jimenez.
The Brazilian replaced Pablo Sarabia and operated just off the Mexican.
Cunha showed some great touches and really linked up well with Jimenez.
It isn’t the first time the pair have looked quite effective playing together.
They featured against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, with Cunha – on as a substitute – crossing superbly for Jimenez to score the equaliser that night.
We’ve subsequently seen glimpses of them together, and it feels as though they could both help get the best out of one another.
Cunha, 23, has shown so far that he struggles to lead the line on his own.
Jimenez can lead it, but has perhaps lacked the right kind of service.
Against Newcastle this week, Lopetegui surely has to consider getting them both into his starting XI.
Jimenez and Cunha feel like a partnership that could be the way forward for Wolves, as Newcastle await
We haven’t seen it all too often yet. But Jimenez and Cunha have shown some promising early signs when they play together.
Neither has scored in the Premier League yet this season, but they both have good link-up play.
Maybe if they are deployed together, one will end up assisting the other for a goal.
£30 million star Jimenez has been improving lately and was a goal threat against Spurs. He was unlucky not to come away with a goal himself. Adama Traore described him as ‘an amazing player’ after that game.
Perhaps he’ll be able to break his duck in the league with the help of Cunha.
