Keep, Sell, Loan – What Wolves need to do with last season’s outcasts for the 2024/25 campaign

What Wolves should do with their seven major loanees from the 2023/24 campaign this summer.

While Wolves have had a small squad over recent years, that isn’t necessarily true. Due to the club’s constant overhaul in the managerial department, many players who were signed are no longer fancied at Wolves.

As a result, many stars have since been sent out on loan, away from the first team picture to be long forgotten about by the Molineux faithful.

In the 2023/24 campaign, seven major players were sent on loan in the hope they would prove their ability at their new club.

Now that they have all returned to Wolves ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, this article lists whether Gary O’Neil should seek to keep, sell or loan out each one.

Sell – Goncalo Guedes

Another unsurprising take, Goncalo Guedes has been one of the worst signings in the Fosun era. It only took six months for the club to realise that the transfer would not work out and he has been out on loan ever since.

With the Portuguese international costing the club £27.5 million, Wolves need to try and earn some of that money back. Another loan will likely only decrease his value further as another year passes on his contract.

A permanent transfer would be the best solution for both parties to finally move on.

Sell – Ki-Jana Hoever

Arguably the most forgotten man at Wolves, Ki-Jana Hoever has spent the last two seasons out on loan with the last 18 months being at Stoke City.

Here, the right-back has done well as the Potters managed to stay up last campaign. However, now at 22 years old, Hoever is still yet to have a convincing stint in the Premier League.

The best option now would be to let the Dutchman go permanently while including a potential sell-on clause.

Loan – Chiquinho

One of the more debatable players on this list, Chiquinho has not seen action in an Old Gold shirt since the 2021/22 season due to injuries and loans.

Last season, he spent the majority of the year out on loan to Portuguese side Famalicão where he impressed. As a result, Sporting are now seeking to buy Chiquinho this summer.

O’Neil is examining the winger currently with him travelling to Marbella. However, Chiquinho is unlikely to push into the first team this campaign. While Wolves shouldn’t sell him, the winger should get another shot in England out on loan.

Keep – Yerson Mosquera

Easily the fan favourite to stay at the club, Yerson Mosquera enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 campaign out on loan. The defender spent 2023 in the MLS before spending the final half of the campaign at Villarreal.

The Colombian massively impressed in Spain which has resulted in Villarreal seeking a permanent move for the defender.

However, Wolves plan on keeping Mosquera for the 2024/25 campaign, a decision that no doubt should be backed.

Sell – Fabio Silva

Arguably the most universally accepted decision amongst the Molineux faithful at the moment is that Fabio Silva needs to depart Wolves.

The former record signing has never shown any signs of reaching his potential at the Molineux side and this window now presents an opportunity to finally part ways.

While Wolves will never get anything close to what they paid for Silva, any money back would be a plus.

Keep – Daniel Podence

Another debatable player, Daniel Podence was shipped out on loan to Olympiacos last season despite being Wolves’ top scorer in the 2022/23 campaign.

In Greece, the winger was highly impressive and helped the club lift the Europa Conference League, the country’s first European trophy.

Now back at Wolves, O’Neil should look at giving Podence a chance. The club are already low on wingers and the 28-year-old clearly still has talent to play a part.

Sell – Sasa Kalajdzic

The final outcast on this list is the most recent one – Sasa Kalajdzic has had rotten luck since signing for Wolves. From an injury on his debut to another one out on loan, the striker can never seem to get a run out on the field.

While it is unlikely that Wolves could sell him this summer due to the Austrian being out on the sidelines, they must explore this avenue.

Now that Strand Jorgen Larsen has joined Wolves, Kalajdzic has no place in the first team, with injuries holding him back further. A permanent move may be necessary.
