I saw ‘fantastic’ Wolves star prove his worth to Gary O’Neil despite FA Cup loss to Coventry

Wolves crashed out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage as Championship side Coventry City scored a 100th-minute winner to book their place in the semi-finals.

Wolves had a fantastic opportunity to reach the last four of the FA Cup but fell short against an energetic and dogged Coventry side.

Gary O’Neil’s men were cut open by the Sky Blues on numerous occasions and just after half-time, Ellis Simms put the visitors into the lead.

Four goals then followed in the second half as the “magnificent” Rayan Ait-Nouri got the Wanderers back on level terms in the 83rd minute before supplying Hugo Bueno with a ridiculous assist five minutes later.

Bueno’s first goal for the club sent Molineux into raptures until Coventry stole victory from the jaws of defeat by scoring in the 97th and 100th minute.

The loss was gut-wrenching for Wolves, who worked so hard to get back into the game, but ultimately came up short.

In truth, Coventry were great value for their victory and created better chances as Wolves had Jose Sa to thank for keeping them in the game.

Gary O’Neil will have been impressed with Jose Sa against Coventry City

It isn’t often that a goalkeeper comes out with Man of the Match for their side in a defeat but that just demonstrated how crucial Sa was in between the sticks today.

The Portuguese shot-stopper made a whopping nine saves, seven of which were inside the box, as his heroics kept the score down and gave the Wanderers a platform to score twice.

In the first half, he spread himself wide to deny Milan van Ewijk’s powerful drive and in the second, he made an excellent double save, first denying Wright with his feet before diving to his left to keep out Josh Eccles’ low strike.

Those were just two of the many examples of Sa sparing his sides’ blushes and it was evident he did everything in his power to keep the visitors out, though he couldn’t have prevented all three goals.

The 31-year-old was even hailed as “absolutely fantastic” for his incredible reflexes by commentator Ally McCoist on ITV and that was just a snippet of how great he was.

Sa has come under scrutiny previously for making mistakes with the ball at his feet, however, his actual goalkeeping ability is unquestionable and Wolves will need more of these heroics if they are to finish in Europe.
