Goncalo Guedes should play as striker for Wolves against Liverpool

Wolves take on Liverpool on Saturday and are seeking to cause a Premier League upset.

Daniel Podence got the only goal of the game at Molineux, meaning Wolves took three big points ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

But the win over the Saints did not come without cost.

Unfortunately, Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an ACL injury and is now facing months on the sidelines.

Wolves only signed him days prior, and the 25-year-old will now be forced to watch his new teammates for the foreseeable future.

Raul Jimenez also got injured on Saturday. The Mexican felt pain in his groin in the warm up and to pull out and be replaced by youngster Chem Campbell.

It has since been reported that Jimenez is expected to train this week and could be available to face the Reds.

But even if he is available, Bruno Lage should overlook the 31-year-old.

He is in poor form right now, and will be lacking match sharpness.

The manager will once again have to turn to his wide forwards. And arguably it should be Goncalo Guedes who gets the nod to lead the line.

Guedes came in as Wolves’ second new signing of the summer for a reported £27.5 million from Valencia (BBC Sport), and has so far made six appearances for Wanderers.

He was the man to replace Kalajdzic at half-time against Southampton. He looked a little rusty, but did give the Southampton defence a new problem to deal with.

Jimenez cannot start at Anfield. His performance against Bournemouth was alarmingly poor, and he then missed the game against Southampton so he will be lacking match sharpness.

Wolves have been linked with a free transfer for Diego Costa in the past couple of days. But current work permit issues mean he is highly unlikely to be involved in the game.

Lage has used Daniel Podence as a false nine before, but it’s a role that doesn’t particularly suit the 26-year-old. He is far more effective playing as a number 10.

So Guedes should play through the middle, and his pace and physicality could give Joe Gomes and Virgil van Dijk, who is looking vulnerable at the moment, something to worry about.

The Dutch defender has looked clumsy and lethargic at times. So livewire Guedes seems like the most suitable option.
