Gary O’Neil will be furious at what Matt Hobbs just said after Wolves transfer deadline day

Wolves pulled off three signings in the January transfer window to bolster Vitor Pereira’s squad.

It appears that seeing Wolves in a relegation battle was enough for Fosun to loosen the purse strings this winter.

Matt Hobbs insisted that he would support Pereira on the transfer front, and that’s just what the sporting director did.

After signing Emmanuel Agbadou from Stade Reims, Wolves returned to complete the signing of Marshall Munetsi and then signed Nasser Djiga from Red Star Belgrade.

Gary O’Neil will not be impressed by Matt Hobbs comments on Vitor Pereira

While Fosun delivered two defenders and a midfielder, it still didn’t fulfil Wolves’ transfer plan to bolster three areas

As well as the signings that did happen, Pereira wanted two midfielders and a forward to arrive before deadline day.

While the Wolves manager will be frustrated that not every wish was granted, the Portuguese can count himself lucky to have received what he did.

Gary O’Neil did not have such luck during his time at Molineux, as the January transfer window of 2024 at Wolves was an absolute disaster.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, made even more difficult by Hobbs’ admission that the club knew they had to give Pereira depth.

Hobbs spoke after Wolves signed Munetsi, expressing the importance of the manager having options.

“It was important for us that Vitor has a number of options in each position,” Hobbs said, making the irony of the comment a frustrating statement for O’Neil to hear.

O’Neil needed support in January transfer window of 2024

Rewind to the 2024 window, that saw O’Neil reveal that Wolves couldn’t afford to sign a new striker, which at the time was desperately disappointing considering the lack of depth in the squad.

O’Neil made it clear that he wanted a number nine up until deadline day in 2024 but, his demands were not met, leaving the squad agonisingly short for the remainder of the season.

Wolves signed no senior players last January as support just wasn’t there for the Englishman, which must make his blood boil seeing what the Old Gold got done this year.

Of course, it became clear that O’Neil wasn’t the right man to take Wolves forward but, the question has to be asked whether the former manager could’ve done more had the club supported him adequately.
